Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 8-8 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 6-10 (third in NFC South)

One step back and hopefully two steps forward next season for the Panthers, who realized that what they were doing just wasn’t working and changes had to be made. So Julius Peppers, the heart of the defense, was let go; and quarterback Jake Delhomme was also shown the door as the Panthers start to pick up what’s left and begin a slow climb that will hopefully bring them back to the top in the NFC South.

Just not this year. And maybe not next year either. It’s just not clear.

One thing is clear – Delhomme could not return, not after throwing 18 interceptions in 12 games and certainly not after back Matt Moore led the team to victories in four of the final five games. But if Moore is the answer, then the question arises of why the team hedged its bets and spent a high draft pick on Jimmy Clausen.

Moore will get the call out of the gate, especially after beating the Vikings, Giants and Saints in the final weeks of last season and with Clausen nowhere near ready. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

John Fox somehow coaxed last year’s bunch to a .500 record but is rumored to be on the way out after this season. He might have to explain why he let Delhomme have free reign last season and never took full advantage of his solid running back tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

Perhaps throwing the ball placated wideout Steve Smith, but it led to disastrous results and forced a major makeover of both the offense and defense.

Both Stewart and Hall had more than 1,000 yards last season despite not being helped by the passing game, and this season they figure to grind things out even moreso as they evaluate the quarterback position. The O-line is decent and there is depth if not talent at tight end.

With Peppers in the wind, the defensive line frightens no one, with no younger player on note to supplement an unremarkable group of retreads.

Jon Beason and the emerging Dan Connor are legit NFL linebackers, but we’ll see how they do with Peppers out of the mix in front of them. The secondary has some talent but not a lot of depth, so injuries could be devastating.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Things could get ugly for the panthers in the NFC South, especially if Tampa Bay’s young team starts to feel its oats.

Moore needs to play well early so the team can get its feet under it. This team has the look and feel of a group that will be running uphill all season.
