Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 8-8 SU, 6-9-1 ATS
Projection this season – 10-6 (second in NFC East)

Disgruntled Giants fans demanding that the front office blow up this team and start again had to be disappointed when the NYG brought back basically the same bunch that finished the season 3-8 last season.

Then again, it’s also pretty much the same cast that won the Super Bowl in 2007 and followed it up with a 12-4 season in 2008, so you figure they deserve one more bite at the apple in the hopes that last season was an aberration.

The Giants figure they can get back on their feet and make a serious run at the NFC East if they can restore their previously dominant running game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw both look healthy again after battling injuries last season, and if they can last the season Tom Coughlin can return to the smash-mouth style of offense that has served the team so well.

Eli Manning starts his seventh season with a healthy heel, strong arm and decent targets (Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith).

The line is also solid if a bit long in the tooth, so unless injuries again tear things apart, the Giants should have little trouble moving the chains.

The Giants were waxed by the Saints, 48-27, on Oct. 18 last season, and the defense never seemed to recover from that. In the last four home games New York gave up a total of 141 points, leading to the ouster of defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan in favor of Perry Fewell.

Fewell brings a more aggressive style, similar to the D crafted by Steve Spagnuolo that led to the ’07 Super Bowl win.

The Giants figure to get after the quarterback with Jason Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka and malcontent Osi Umenyiora joined by top draft choice Jason Pierre-Paul. But the team hasn’t significantly addressed a weak linebacker group, and if safety Kenny Phillips isn’t 100 percent healthy, the secondary also has major problems.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – With all the bluster about the Jets, the Giants have operated off the wide New York media radar screen, even as they get set to open a new stadium. The secondary will be tested early with a Week 2 game at Indianapolis and a Week 5 game at Houston.

If New York doesn’t get off to a fast start, Coughlin’s brain could explode.
