Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Last season – 11-5 SU, 9-7 ATS
Projection this season – 8-8 (third in NFC East)

“We must hang together,” Benjamin Franklin said during America’s formative stages, “or assuredly we will hang separately.”

Seems like everyone in the Eagles organization – management, coaches, players and even fans — was united and ready to turn the page on the Donovan McNabb chapter, and now we’re about to find out if Kevin Kolb is indeed the answer at quarterback.

In choosing the bird in the bush, the Eagles are turning over their offense and immediate future to a QB whose 12 career starts include a grand total of 4 TD passes and 7 interceptions.

If Barack Obama represents hope and change, Kolb is change and then hope for the Eagles and their notoriously impatient fan base. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Eagles will jam a bar of soap down the throat of anyone in the organization who utters the word “rebuilding,” but with only one non-kicker on the roster over the age of 30, that’s exactly what’s going on.

Besides McNabb, Philly has given the heave-ho to DB Sheldon Brown, running back Brian Westbrook, offensive lineman Shawn Andrews and several other contributors as they have pretty much gutted the house down to the foundation and frame and started again with hammers, nails and drywall.

DeSean Jaackson, who was outspoken in his desire for Kolb over McNabb, remains one of the league’s best diva deep threats, but he’ll see tons of safety coverage over the top as defenses force the young Eagles to put together mistake-free long drives.

That will shine the spotlight on emerging RB LeSean McCoy, who should get 18 to 20 carries and game and should easily get more than 1,000 yards this season.

The birds spent a good portion of their draft trying to fix serious holes in the defensive line, but will be very young there.

Stewart Bradley returns from an ACL injury and should help bolster a mediocre linebacking group, and no one really knows what to expect from a secondary that is still reeling from the trade of safety Brian Dawkins two years ago.

THE WAY IT LOOKS NOW – Only one person in history was able to turn water into wine, and it wasn’t Andy Reid. The Eagles are hoping that a relatively easy early-season schedule (after Green Bay in Week 1 they play six straight non-playoff teams) will be a springboard toward a run at the post-season.

But realistically Philly now is at best a playoff contender after years of starting the season with an eye on the Super Bowl.
