Rex Ryan may be the perfect Rx for a Jets team that has long had an inferiority complex in the AFC East.
Then again, there hasn’t been a lot of breathing room in a division that houses the Patriots, and Ryan’s braggadocio stands in welcome contrast to Eric Mangini’s Belichick-type stoicism.
Bottom line for Ryan: Can his Jets make any headway in one of the best divisions in the NFL? Well, maybe. Judging from off-season roster moves, Ryan is trying to replicate the 2008 Ravens, who rode a terrific defense, decent ground game and rookie QB all the way to the AFC Championship Game.
LB Bart Scott was pilfered from those Ravens, and he joins some pretty good returning defenders, including safety Kerry Rhodes.
Ryan says that the defense has turned the corner, and will be much improved from the one that gave up the most points in the division – and second-most in the AFC – last year.
Brett Favre and his ego are gone, and in his place is top draft choice Mark Sanchez. Sanchez will start sooner rather than later, but the Jets will most certainly shrink the playbook early on and gear the offense around RBs Thomas Jones and Leon Washington.
Surprising stat: After beating Tennessee in Week 12, the Jets lost 4 of their last 5. Three of the losses were to teams with losing records – Denver, San Francisco and Seattle.
Team strengths: Gang Green has assembled a nice O-line, with Alan Faneca and Nick Mangold the big guns. Brandon Moore, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Damien Woody are also solid.
Team Weakness: You’ve got to assume that they are shopping for an impact wide receiver. Lavernaues Coles was let go, leaving Jerricho Cotchery as the No. 1 guy. Cotchery moves the chains but can’t stretch the field.

The Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez era kicks off in New York as these two have brought a sense of excitement for the upcomiong season. Cut in the mold of his dad Buddy, Ryan brings his aggresive style defense that made Baltimore such a feared unit over the years.
First round pick, Sanchez has a good chance to be the starting QB on opening day. I think he has the ability to make an impact right from the start.
