College Football Power Rankings Week 2

USC came out and absolutely dominated the San Jose State Spartans over the weekend. In doing so, they made the biggest statement out of the Top 4 ranked teams from last week.

Florida remains on top and Texas looks good as well. Let’s take a look at this weeks NCAAF Power Rankings.

NCAAF Power Ratings

1. Florida – – The champs deserve this ranking as they showed no weakness in knocking off Charleston-Southern 62 to 3.

2. USC – – The Trojans played about as well as any team on the first Saturday of the season. They racked up 56 points against San Jose State which means that Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley isn’t gong to hurt them.

3. Texas – – The Longhorns did what they had to do when spanking around Louisiana-Monroe 59 to 20. There isn’t a whole lot separating the Gators, Trojans and Longhorns in my mind.

4. Alabama – – The victory wasn’t pretty but the Crimson Tide did beat Va Tech and they did cover the spread. Hey, that’s enough, right?

5. Mississippi – – They dominated the Memphis Tigers but more importantly looked good in the second half doing it. Ole Miss is better than Florida fans think.

6. Oklahoma State – – OSU beat a ranked SEC team, the Georgia Bulldogs, at home. Dez Bryant was awesome catching those passes. This is the team from Oklahoma that will challenge Texas in 2009.

7. Penn State – – Okay, Akron isn’t that good, but they looked good destroying them. The Nittany Lions should keep climbing in the rankings because their schedule is downright ugly.

8. LSU – – Early on in their game versus Washington, they didn’t appear to be doing all that well. That’s okay, they bounced back and dominated in the second half and it was a victory on the road.

9. Virginia Tech – – Losing to Alabama on the road should bring not shame to the Hokies. They played well and because of that still deserve to remain in the Top 10.

10. Ohio State – – Okay, I can’t drop them out of the Top 10 but, man, that game against Navy was god awful. They could be in trouble moving forward.

11. California – – The Golden Bears showed that the Pac 10 this year isn’t just about USC. 52 points against Maryland is impressive no matter what issues the Terrapins are going through.

12. Boise State – – They held Oregon to 8 points and then kept their cool against the Ducks after the now infamous LeGarrette Blount punch. Kudos to the Broncos for doing that.

13. Georgia Tech – – Last year was no fluke. They probably should have been better offensively against Jacksonville State but just going out there and playing hard on defense impressed me.

14. Utah – – The Utes were touch and go there for a while against Utah State but then scored 19 straight points against their state rivals.

15. Georgia – – Losing to the Oklahoma State on the road isn’t a big deal. Now, losing by 14 might be. We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

16. Notre Dame – – The Fighting Irish were impressive against Nevada, but Nevada has a brand new offensive line. So, keeping that team scoreless doesn’t say a whole lot to me.

17. North Carolina – – The Tar Heels put 40 points against The Citadel and held that team to only 6. It was a good victory for NC.

18. BYU – – Yes, the Cougars beat Oklahoma, but they barely beat them and they knocked out Sam Bradford early on in the game. They’re going to have to show more to move up in the rankings.

19. Florida State – – If they do what they should, that is beat Miami, then they could move up. If they lose, and there is a possibility that they will lose, then the Seminoles could drop out of the rankings altogether next week.

20. Nebraska – – The Cornhuskers put up 49 points against Florida International. That was a good sign because with Bo Pellini as the coach, we know that their defense will be tough.

21. Kansas – – The Jayhawks are yet another Big 12 team that everyone should pay attention to. 49 to 3 is what the score ended up in their game against Northern Colorado this past Saturday.

22. TCU – – The Horned Frogs haven’t played a game yet in 2009. Until they do, I can’t very well put them in the Top 20, now can I?

23. Michigan – – I was very, very impressed with how the Wolverines dominated Western Michigan in their first game of the season. They went out and just dominated the Broncos. It looks to me like Coach Rich Rodriguez has put this team on the right track.

24. Tennessee – – Talk about impressive! The Volunteers look like night and day from a year ago. 63 points in Lane Kiffin’s first game as head coach? Wow! If they do that against UCLA, then Florida had better watch out.

25. Oklahoma – – I’ll keep them in the Top 25 because they did lose to a ranked opponent, but the thing that bothers me is the lack of adjustments made by the Sooners’ coaching staff in this game. Your quarterback leaves the game and all you do is stick to the game plan? Come on!

The biggest game I looking forward to is Ohio State and USC. We will find out if the Navy game was a wake up call, or are the Buckeyes just not that good.

A win over USC would move them right back into the top 5, but I think they are going to get waxed in this one.
