Week 12 – MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (6-5) @ IOWA HAWKEYES (9-2)

Preview:

The Iowa Hawkeyes’ dream 2009 Big Ten campaign has come crashing back down to Earth in recent weeks, but they still look to finish strong and secure a January bowl game.

Such aspirations are reasonable versus an unintimidating Gophers team in the Battle for the Floyd of Rosedale. Backup QB James Vandenberg actually played quite well against Ohio State last week; it took a gutsy field goal from soccer-style OSU hero Devin Barclay in overtime to put Iowa away. When playing at their best, the two-headed monster of Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher is productive at tailback to go with an opportunistic defense.

Minnesota tends to give the Hawkeyes a tough game in this annual rivalry; they will have to follow that trend buttressed with some luck to top the home side in 2009. For the most part, the Gophers have beaten the teams they were supposed to, and lost to the teams they were supposed to this season. Pivot Adam Weber and tailback Duane Bennett must have a whale of a game if they are to pull the upset, even without starting Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi.

A bizarre outcome in this match-up isn’t out of the realm of possiblity, but I do not think it is likely, either.
