A Mountain West showdown featuring two of college football’s most underrated teams will take place Saturday, when the BYU Cougars host the Air Force Falcons.

BYU is currently ranked No. 22 in the country, and is still in line for second place in the Mountain West conference. The Cougars are led by a core groups of seniors, including one of the most prolific quarterbacks in school history, Max Hall. On the season, Hall has quietly been one of the most underrated players in college football. He is currently ranked second in the sport with a 166.5 passer rating, as well as third in college football, completing 69.9 percent of his passes. Joining him in the backfield is running back Harvey Unga, who has rushed for 833 yards on the season. Hall’s top target is actually his brother-in-law, tight end Dennis Pitta, who has 45 catches on the season.

On the defensive side of the football, the Brigham Young Cougars are much less experienced, and much less accomplished. They’re currently ranked 37th in college football in scoring defense, allowing 21.6 points per game, while their total defense allows 337.5 yards per game. It is important to note however, that the BYU has the 18th ranked rushing defense in the nation, which will be important, against the potent Air Force rushing attack.

Speaking of Air Force Falcons, it’s hard to believe, but this is already their 12th and final game of the 2009 regular season. Standing at 7-4, they’d sure like a signature win to maybe guarantee themselves a better bowl bid.

The Falcons are one of college football’s most potent rushing attacks, as they average 279 yards per game out of their triple option offense.

Jared Tew and Asher Clark lead this group, as each has rushed for over 700 yards on the season. It is important to note that quarterback Tim Jefferson has not thrown for more than 131 yards once this season. Defensively, the Falcons are one of college football’s most underrated teams, as they’re currently ranked 9th in the country, allowing just 13 points a game, and also have the No. 1 passing defense in college football as well, allowing just 127 yards per game.

It’ll be an interesting contrast Saturday afternoon in Provo, as both of these teams do things completely differently. It will also be interesting to see how BYU’s high-powered passing attack is handled by Air Force’s top ranked pass defense, and how BYU’s strong run defense handles Air Force’s triple option.

While BYU comes into this game with the name recognition, they are coming off an embarrassingly close win over winless New Mexico, 24-19. And with both these teams playing well on the defensive side of the ball, I expect this one to be close.

But I like Air Force. Remember, they played TCU the closest of any team in college football this year, losing 20-17. They are also 2-0 ATS against ranked teams, and 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall. With BYU playing heated rival Utah in a week, they may be looking ahead as well.

Take Air Force, getting eight points in this week’s BetUS.com college football betting odds.
