This match-up of in-state rivals at the home of the Denver Broncos is something football fans in the state of Colorado can get used to for the next decade, as Colorado and Colorado State have agreed to play at INVESCO Field for several seasons.

This opening game should give the Buffaloes enough of a test; though it’s one Colorado better be up for because the team has underachieved and coach Dan Hawkins is on the hot seat.

Colorado unquestionably has the more talented team, but as is often the case when in-state rivals meet, you can throw the line-up cards out the window and must play the game.

Junior CU pivot Tyler Hansen wrested the starting job from Cody Hawkins (the coach’s son) and he returns almost the entire offense to help spark the attack. Everything should flow from the devastating physicality of the offensive line, led by RG Ryan Miller and LT Nate Solder.

They should be able to push around the Rams’ front seven and, accordingly, it will create time for Hansen to make decisions and running lanes for the speedy pint-sized duo of Rodney Stewart and Brian Lockridge (both under 5″7, 180 lbs).

Speaking of O-lines, the opposite is the case with the Rams. Colorado State’s front five is extremely inexperienced and though they have weapons in TE Eric Pietz and a deep stable of tailbacks led by UCLA transfer Raymond Carter, it will be superfluous if the line can’t generate push up front.

The Rams defense can certainly hold its own, but there just isn’t enough offensive explosiveness coming out of Colorado Springs for the Rams to have a balanced team.

Look for the Buffs’ skilled defense to overwhelm the Rams’ front line and get penetration to disrupt Colorado State’s attack. Colorado State has an excellent linebacker corps of its own accord, but Colorado sorely needs to assert themselves in front of countless fans.

Its team is not without its own imperfections, but there are just too many question marks on CSU’s sideline for them to pull the upset.
