Arizona State will no doubt be happy to be back in Tempe for its annual Homecoming game, as Devils play its first game at Sun Devil Stadium since September 25, a span of 34 days.

ASU concluded its three game road schedule with an embarrassing 50-17 loss to Cal this past Saturday.

What initially appeared to be a reprieve—playing at home against the wretched Washington State Cougars –may turn out to be a little tougher than expected.

The Cougars have been improving over the past five weeks, and after losing to No. 17 Arizona 24-7, hung tough against the No. 13 ranked Stanford Cardinal, scoring 21 points in the 4th quarter but eventually fell short, 38-28.

You have to give credit to WSU head coach Paul Wulff and his coaching staff, as they have done a good job bringing the team closer to a win each week, especially in the area of offense. They have a lot of weapons and are starting to take advantage of some very good receivers that they have in Marquess Wilson and Jared Karstetter.

They also boast sophomore QB Jeff Tuel, who is the Pac-10 leader in passing yards and completions, while raking fourth in the conference in touchdown passes with 14.

Arizona State on the other hand, may have lost its starting quarterback, Steven Threet, who leads the conference in interceptions, but played only a half after he suffered a concussion against Cal on Saturday. He threw two interceptions, bringing his total to 13 against 11 touchdown passes in seven games. Threet has been listed as day-to-day.

That’s  unfortunate for the Devils as Threet gives the team its best chance to win.

Back up Brock Osweiler, who had been suffering a back injury, is healthy again, and may start if Threet is declared unable.

An even bigger area of concern for the Devils is the team’s defense. With the loss of key player, linebacker Shelly Lyons to a broken bone in his foot, the defense has been a huge disappointment, and it really showed against Cal.

The Cougars will look to pounce on a dejected ASU team that showed a lack of focus against the Golden Bears, as they attempt to snap a 16–game winless streak against FBS teams, and 14 straight in the Pac-10.

This will be the 37th match-up between Arizona State and Washington State. ASU leads the series 22-12-2, including a 13-5-2 mark in Tempe. ASU won last season’s meeting, beating the Cougars 27-14 at Martin Stadium. Arizona State has won six straight against Washington State and three in a row at Sun Devil Stadium.

The two teams enter Saturday’s contest both looking for win but for varying reasons. The Devils chances of making a bowl game are still alive, but to get to one, ASU must win four of its remaining five games, staring with WSU. The Cougars, well they just want a win.

Free Pick: Arizona State
