San Diego State has enjoyed a generally pleasant season in the Mountain West. The Aztecs came up huge with an upset over Air Force and continued their solid play with a 30-20 win over New Mexico in Week 8.

The Aztecs got the job done with stellar “D,” allowing 308 total yards and stopping the Lobos 11 times out of 12 tries on third down. Overall, San Diego State has the nation’s 15th-ranked defense this season.

The offensive flash and dash has made plenty of headlines for the Aztecs, too. Ryan Lindley has done a fine job at quarterback, averaging 270 yards per game with 12 touchdown passes versus just five INTs this season. His top target, DeMarco Sampson, scored twice last week and has 653 yards on the season.

But perhaps the biggest story of 2010 for the Aztecs is freshman running back Ronnie Hillman. He’s been a monster this year, averaging 121.3 rushing yards per game and running for 11 touchdowns in seven contests. He’s been one of the country’s best first-year players this season.

Wyoming Cowboys (2-6)

It’s been rough going for Wyoming this season. Can you call what they put on the field every Saturday an “offense”? The Cowboys average a paltry 12.6 points and 225 total offensive yards per game, easily the worst marks in the MWC. Top rusher Alvester Alexander has a cool name but his 2.6 yards per carry is pretty uncool. Austyn Carta-Samuels has been mildly competent at quarterback, completing 62.6 per cent of his passes for five touchdowns and five picks, but he hasn’t thrown for more than 156 yards in a game this season.

The Cowboys allow 443.4 total yards and a hilariously awful 238 rushing yards per game. Looking at those numbers, it’s amazing that Wyoming has managed two victories this year.

The pick:

I know San Diego State isn’t exactly a BCS juggernaut and I know the Aztecs actually lost to Wyoming last year but I’m surprised San Diego State isn’t favored by more than 10 points. Statistically, Wyoming is as bad as any team in the nation. The Aztecs can move the ball and keep teams off the board, so I think they’ll win this one easily.
