The No. 9 Wildcats were surprised and outplayed by a feisty Oregon State Beavers team that controlled just about every aspect of the game from nearly start to finish.

Oregon State QB Ryan Katz dissected an Arizona defense that had been ranked No. 2 nationally, giving up 230.8 yards per game, completing 30 of 42 while passing for 393 yards and two touchdowns, and plowed in for another as the Beavers upset Arizona 29-27 in Tucson.

Arizona was a mess and it seemed that the corners were pulling off all game long allowing the Beavs to work the short outlet passes and the running game, mixing in a few deep ball threats with fatal results.

Junior QB Nick Foles completed 35-of-46 passing for 440 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to Keola Antolin that cut the lead to just two with under two minutes to play, but it was a little too late as Oregon State recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt, sealing its fifth consecutive victory in Tucson.

The ‘Cats will now get a gift and a chance to regain their momentum and as they travel to Pullman to take on the struggling Washington State Cougars who are coming off a 43-23 loss to No. 3 Oregon in Week 6.

Even though it wasn’t the blowout most expected, it was the Cougars fourth straight loss and fifth straight time this season that they have allowed at least 35 points per game vs. a FBS opponent.

QB Jeff Tuel threw for 245 yards and a touchdown and James Montgomery added a 26-yard TD run in the first half while Jared Karstetter had 10 catches for 106 yards as the Cougars rolled up 336 yard of offense on Saturday, just a year after the Ducks held them to just 151 yards in a 52-6 loss.

Could head coach Paul Wulff be making progress?

Well don’t get too excited because the Cougs defense also surrendered a whopping  558 yards to the Ducks, and remain second worst in the NCAA in points allowed with 42.8 ppg. This will bode well for an Arizona offense that is averaging just over 34 points per game.

However, one area of concern for the ‘Cats’ will be its defense, that didn’t look at all like itself in Saturday’s outing against Oregon State. Wazzou’s offensive production is almost double what it was last season and if the Arizona defenders get caught napping, it could spell disaster.

The Cougs have displayed that they can play with the big boys with only a 20-point loss against Oregon and covering the spread in both their last games. They nearly put themselves in a position to win last week if not for a couple of dropped passes.

If Arizona comes in expecting a cupcake like Oregon did until Wazzou held a 14-8 early in the first, then they are going to leave Pullman unranked and 1-2 in the Pac.
