Cal rushed for 304 yards on 55 carries en-route to a 35-7 victory over UCLA on Saturday.

The G-Bears ability to run the ball against the Bruins made its nonexistent passing game a little less noticeable as quarterback Kevin Riley threw for just 83 yards on 9 for 16 passing. He is ninth in the Pac-10 in passing yards per game at 186.2 and is fifth in the conference in passing efficiency with a figure of 141.4. He has nine touchdown passes and four interceptions.

However, the senior could have a big day against a USC secondary that has given up some big plays and ranks just116th out of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision teams against the pass.

The Bears are collecting nearly 36 PPG and are ranked 22nd in rushing behind a solid effort from RB  Shane Vereen who is Cal’s biggest weapon on offense, running for 577 yards and eight TDs while catching two.

This could also be trouble for a USC as it has been allowing an average of 35 PPG.

In contrast Cal ranks eighth nationally in total defense (254.8 yards allowed per game), and are surrendering just 15.8 points per game, 17th in the country. The last time Cal yielded fewer points per game for a full season was in 1968, when it gave up just 10.4 per contest.

The Trojans will need some extra effort offensively of they want to get back on the rails after dropping two consecutive games on  last-second field goals.

Fortunately, the offense hasn’t been an issue so far, as they rank in the top 30 in the country in passing, rushing, and points (35.7 PPG).  QB, Matt Barkley, has led the charge, throwing for 1,517 yards and 15 TDs, and is coming off his best performance for the season as he passed for a career-best 390 yards and three touchdowns without an interception against Stanford.

The running game remains consistent averaging six yards per carry with the duo of Allen Bradford and Marc Tyler who have combined for nearly 900 yards and nine TDs, making easier for Barkley to throw the ball.

Both teams is seeking its second conference win with Cal trying to get into the hunt and USC attempting to show they are still relevant in the conference, even if they can’t play in the postseason.

So far, the road has not treated Cal well, losing both games away from home against Nevada, who racked 52 points with its pistol offense and Arizona.

The game will also bring together to coaches who know each other well, as Cal’s Jeff Tedford oversaw the transition of USC’s Lane Kiffin from quarterback to coach when he was offensive coordinator at Fresno State in the 1990s.

If USC can contain the run, they could put the pressure on Riley to win it all by himself. If they do that, they may have a shot at ending their two-game skid.
