Boise State saw its national title hopes rise last week after Alabama was upset. Now, the third-ranked Broncos are rejuvenated and ready to push for the big game. They visit San Jose State on Saturday.

Despite the Alabama loss, Boise State (5-0, 4-1 ATS) faces a tremendous uphill battle. The Broncos have already faced the toughest portion of their schedule, and voters have already proved they’re unconvinced by blowouts over poor competition. Boise State picked up another of those victories last week, beating Toledo 57-14.

The offense has been staggering, cranking out over 50 points in three of its five games and averaging 35.0 points in victories against two ranked opponents (Virginia Tech and Oregon State). Kellen Moore is a Heisman favorite and has been particularly sharp in his past three games, throwing nine touchdown passes and zero interceptions. Part of Moore’s success should be attributed to the offensive line, which has allowed their quarterback to be sacked just once all year. The Broncos also have just five turnovers all season. Though Moore gets most of the attention, the ground game is very good in its own right, averaging 5.8 yards per carry on the year.

Boise State’s “D” is almost as good. It ranks second in the country in yards per game and has racked up eight takeaways in the past two contests. The line has been particularly active and the Broncos picked up another four sacks in the Toledo game.

San Jose State (1-5, 2-2 ATS) is trying to gut through a miserable season. First-year coach Mike MacIntyre has been killed by injuries, as the Spartans have already lost nine starters to injury (including seven seniors).

As if testing the Spartans’ depth wasn’t enough, they’ve faced an absolutely brutal schedule; Boise State will be the fifth ranked-opponent they’ve played this year. Last week was a 35-13 loss at Nevada, though there were some positives to draw from the game. The Spartans racked up 178 yards on the ground, its second consecutive outing with at least 100 yards rushing.

Unfortunately, the score could have been much more lopsided. The Wolf Pack churned out 640 yards but had just 35 points to show for it because of penalties and other miscues.

San Jose State has already been mashed up by ranked opponents several times this season; Saturday won’t be any different. The best the Spartans can hope for is a lapse in concentration by the Broncos to keep the score down. Even that’s unlikely; with the Crimson Tide falling, Boise State should be more determined than ever to hang up some style points.
