When looking at the numbers and when looking at their schedule, both teams are a lot alike. We’ll talk a little more about Mississippi State later, but Ole Miss they are just a little bit ahead in terms of development. Ole Miss, this year, haven’t won all their close games, but they’ve won just a couple of more over the Bulldogs and that makes all the difference in the college football world between a bowl eligible team, and team fighting to get bowl eligible.

Ole Miss has come up short on multiple occasions this year. Against Auburn, against Texas A&M, but they were able to upset LSU at home. You can even throw in a close, come-from-behind victory over Vanderbilt to open the season. Non-conference wise they got a fragile Texas team and handled them.

For the Bulldogs they haven’t been as fortunate. They haven’t had that big win. It’s been a year of close, but no cigar. To open the year they played the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Arlington, Texas. It wasn’t the best game showing for both teams, but it was a sloppy, competitive game. Mississippi State were only down 7-3 at halftime before the Cowboys pulled away with a couple of touchdowns in the second half.

After beating helpless Alcorn State, Mississippi State played a tough game versus then lowly Auburn (little did we know just how good Auburn would be). It was a back and forth game and the Bulldogs were leading going into the 4th quarter, but Auburn would score a last second touchdown to win the game 24-20.

That’s just been the type of season it’s been for the Bulldogs. On the road against South Carolina they were competitive for a half before the Gamecocks pulled away, and just a couple of weeks ago they played the Alabama Crimson Tide pretty tough.

To wrap this up, both teams are just about on the same level, Ole Miss is just a little bit more developed will more talent, but otherwise both are alike and both have had very similar seasons.

The stats back this up as well. For the season, Ole Miss has averaged 487 yards a game, 293 passing, and 193 rushing. Mississippi State averages 438 yards, 244 passing, and 193 rushing. Ole Miss has scored 32 points a game and given up 24.9. Mississippi State have scored 27 points a game, and given up 25 points a game.

Danny’s FREE College Football Pick:

It’s a rivalry game, a special Thursday night edition and I like the Bulldogs in this one. I think they have a lot more to play for and they’re at home. I would say Ole Miss is the more talented team, but they aren’t at a level of an Auburn, Alabama, etc.

All in all, I like the Bulldogs in this one. I think an upset is very likely, but the best pick is +3. It’ll be a close game, and again, the Bulldogs need a win to become bowl eligible, and they’re at home for this special Thursday night game. The players will be excited to play and the fans will bang their cowbells all game long.

Pick: Mississippi State +3
