Utah (9-2, 7-3-1 ATS) beat San Diego State 38-34 last week, snapping a two-game losing streak—though recovering from it is another story entirely. The Utes are just 1-3 ATS in their past four games, and they’ve tumbled down the polls.

The offense was absolutely miserable during the two-game skid to TCU and Notre Dame, putting up just 10 points and 464 yards combined. Quarterback Jordan Wynn was terrible, failing to surpass 200 yards in either game while tossing three interceptions. He didn’t get much help from the ground game, either, as the team managed just 122 rush yards over both contests. Everyone finally got going against the Aztecs last week. Wynn threw for 362 yards, two scores and no picks while the ground attack cranked out 138 yards and three touchdowns.

The defense has been just as porous lately, and there were no signs of improvement against the lowly Aztecs. Utah has allowed 39.6 points per game over its last three outings. The Utes have been utterly helpless against the pass, though they’ve been much better against the run.

BYU (6-5, 6-5 ATS) has turned its season. The Cougars have won four consecutive games and are enjoying a 5-1 run against the spread. They crushed New Mexico 40-7 last week.

The win streak has been propelled by a surging “D.” BYU is allowing just 11 points per game in its last four contests. Creating turnovers is certainly a big part of it. Against the Lobos, the Cougars came away with four. While that’s impressive, they have to do a better job getting to the quarterback—especially with Wynn under center. BYU sacked New Mexico just once. Overall, BYU defends the pass pretty well; it’s the run that’s sometimes a weak link.

On the other side of the ball, turnovers will also be a major focal point—especially with freshman quarterback Jake Heaps taking the reigns. This will be his first exposure to an environment as hostile as this, and he knows it. Lately his line has played much better, though, and the rushing attack has yielded some balance.

This is Utah’s first home game since the debacle against TCU. Hostile environment doesn’t even begin to describe what Heaps and the Cougars are in for. Utah’s BCS bowl game hopes may be over, but it can still put a nice capper on the regular season by crushing a hated rival. The defense will ride the crowd’s emotion and get back on track, while the balanced offense will prove too much for BYU
