Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: WSU Cougars

Coach: Paul Wulff
2009 Record: 1-11

Washington State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

The Cougars had a pair of excellent campaigns in 2002-03, playing in the Rose Bowl in ’02 and giving Texas a nail-biter in the Holiday Bowl in ’03.

Since then, however, it’s been a lean decade in Pullman. In Paul Wulff’s third season, he fields a deeper and stronger team than in the past, yet there is still a noticeable gap between Washington State and the rest of the conference.

It’s not like there’s no reason for optimism – the Cougars have a strong D-line and a QB with some serious potential in sophomore Jeff Tuel – but Cougars fans shouldn’t be getting their hopes up this season.

Team Strengths:

Sophomore DE Travis Long and strong JUCO transfer DT Brandon Rankin comprise two pieces of an effective, much-improved defensive line. After years of dreadful quarterback play, Tuel burned his redshirt last season and threw for 354 yards versus California.

He is 6”3, 211 lbs and a strong passer; before his tenure at WSU is done he will remind fans of Cougars legend Drew Bledsoe. Senior RT Micah Hannam is also a player.

The senior kicker/punter tandem of Nico Grasu and Reid Forrest leave the special teams in experienced, capable hands (or feet, more accurately).

Team Weaknesses:

Tuel will be much improved, but no dynamic offensive player emerged in 2009. Despite the many returning starters this season, this doesn’t bode well for the 2010 offense. Theoretically, senior RB James Montgomery should be a threat (he was a highly-touted prospect that initially signed with California) but he was so-so in limited opportunities last year.

The receivers are underwhelming and the defensive secondary isn’t striking fear into any quarterbacks’ hearts.

With the exception of junior Will linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis, the LB unit is entirely unproven.

2010-2011 WSU Football Prediction: 3-9

The general lack of talent on the Cougars’ roster is exacerbated by the fact that the rest of the Pac-10 is so remarkably balanced and threatening. Washington State surely has a fistful of players that could play for elite teams, but the depth just isn’t there.

There are a couple of non-conference small fries that the Cougs can handle (Montana State, SMU, etc.) but it will be a slow road back for Washington State, especially in 2010.
