UCF went on to upset Georgia in the Liberty Bowl.

The Knights finished with an 11-3 record, which was the best season in school history. In fact, this school had never won more than ten games in a season.

The Knights only return four starters on defense, but they do have a solid nucleus coming back on the offensive side of the ball.

It will be up to the offense to raise its game in 2011, because it is highly unlikely that this UCF defense will be able to hold opponents to just 17 points a game for a second straight season.

Team Strengths:

The UCF running game will be nearly impossible to stop in 2011. Latavius Murray, Ronnie Weaver, and Brynn Harvey are all three terrific running backs. Weaver had some injuries last year, but he appears to be ready to go again this year. Harvey missed all of last year with an injury, but he looked like a budding star in 2009.

Quarterback Jeff Godfrey is also a terrific runner, and he picked up more than 500 yards on the ground last year.

This should be the best running team in the conference.

Godfrey did a great job at the quarterback spot for UCF last year, and I think this team can count on another solid year from him in 2011. Everyone knew Godfrey could run, but he also completed 66% of his passes and threw for more than 2,000 yards. Godfrey is difficult to stop because of his dual-threat ability.

Remember, Godfrey was just a freshman last year, so he should get much better.

The secondary is a big strength for this UCF defense. Both Josh Robinson and Kemal Ishmael were first-team Conference USA selections last year. This is a ball-hawking group that is great at slowing down the high-octane Conference USA passing games.

Team Weaknesses:

The linebackers have been the strength of the defense in the last couple years, but they won’t be as strong this year. UCF lost its top two linebackers to graduation, and now it will be up to some inexperienced players to try to step in and know their roles right away.

This is a defensive scheme that relies heavily on its linebackers, and that could be a bit of a problem this year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

UCF needs to get more of a vertical passing game going. The Knights complete a high percentage of passes, but the best defenses will take away those short passes and force UCF to beat them deep.

Can anyone on this team become the reliable deep threat that is needed?

2011-2012 UCF Football Prediction: 10-3

UCF is an interesting team because they do things differently than most teams in this conference.

This isn’t a spread offense that throws the ball on every down; rather it is a power running game that can beat you with the running game even when you know it is coming. Circle the calendar for the key game of this season on November 12 at Southern Miss.

I think that will be the game that decides the Conference USA East Division.

This team might take a tiny step back because of a young defense, but the Knights will be very good again this season.
