Big 12 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Coach: Tommy Tuberville
2009 Record: 9-4

Former head coach Mike Leach’s creative offensive schemes vaulted Tech to new heights in recent seasons, but turmoil has since befallen the program. Leach was fired last year and in to replace him is former Auburn sideline-roamer Tommy Tuberville. Leach – who could seemingly make a Ukrainian ice dancer a 3,500-yard passer – is gone, so perhaps it is “back to the drawing board” somewhat in Lubbock.

Tuberville is renowned for developing stud running backs in the SEC, so here perhaps is where we start to see some more balance with the Raiders’ attack.

Senior pivots Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield are back, so the experience is there for prolific numbers, but learning new schemes often throws players for a loop.

Team Strengths:

Offensively, there’s loads of experience everywhere but the offensive line. Senior tailback Baron Batch should crack 1,000 yards under Tuberville, after racking up 884 yards and 14 majors in ’09.

The receiving quadrangle of seniors Detron Lewis, Lyle Leong, junior Tramain Swindall and soph Alexander Torres (67 receptions as a frosh!) should grab anything pitched their way.

Last year’s two leading tacklers, linebacker Brian Duncan and safety Cody Davis, also return for a swan song.

Team Weaknesses:

Leading sackmaster Daniel Howard is gone and it will be a fight between a JUCO and redshirt frosh Kerry Hyder to replace the production.

Six foot-seven, 275-pound JUCO Scott Smith was one of the best defensive lineman in junior college last year, however. The offensive line breaks in a cluster of new starters, and even the two returning veterans aren’t world-beaters.

Potts and Sheffield, who were already banged up in the spring, might have to emphasize their footwork for 2010.

2010-2011 Texas Tech Football Prediction: 9-4

Texas Tech has the potential for a well-oiled offense, as per usual, but coaching changes usually set a team back a notch or two. The Red Raiders have three tricky road games after Oct. 23 in the form of Colorado, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Tech also faces the Longhorns in Lubbock in the third week of the season.

Hence, though 300-yard passing games likely won’t go the way of the dodo bird, it would be surprising if Tech tops last year’s win total.
