Big 12 Football Previews: Texas A&M

Head Coach: Mike Sherman
2009 Record: 6-7

Texas A&M Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10,000

The Aggies of Texas A&M showed that they have plenty of firepower a year ago, but the defense kept them from having a good season. Jerrod Johnson proved that he is an amazing athlete and one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in all of college football.

If you haven’t seen Johnson play, you’ll want to make sure you tune in this year, because he is definitely something special.

The expectations are definitely higher this year for the Aggies. In 2009 the Aggies had the fifth ranked offense in terms of yards per game, and all of the leaders at the prime skill positions are back for another season. The pro style offense that Sherman implemented seems to be really making things roll in College Station.

The Aggies have the potential to take another big step upward this year, but there are some real questions.

Team Strengths:

Jerrod Johnson is a huge strength for this football team. Johnson is a prolific passer, who takes great care of the football. Last year he threw just eight interceptions despite throwing 497 passes. In addition to his throwing ability, Johnson can beat you with his feet anytime he wants. In 2009, he gained 506 yards on the ground and had eight rushing touchdowns.

The running backs are very good for the Aggies. Christine Michael led the team last year in rushing and was the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year. Cyrus Gray is a great second option for the Aggies, and since the two have different running styles it can help keep the defense off guard.

The linebackers are definitely the strength of the defense. Von Miller led the nation in sacks last year with 17, and he is the leader of this defense. The other linebackers are also experienced and should rack up plenty of stops.

Team Weaknesses:

The front four of the Aggies defense doesn’t have the solid run stuffer that it needs. The Big 12 has some powerful offensive lines, and there is a good chance this defensive line could struggle to stop them from opening big holes in the running game.

The secondary is a huge area of concern. The Aggies have been getting torched by solid quarterbacks in the last few years, and we all know the Big 12 has plenty of good quarterbacks. These youngsters need to step up soon or the Aggies defense will continue to struggle.

On the offensive side of the ball the only real question mark is the offensive line. They tend to let the defense get too much pressure on Johnson. Johnson was sacked 29 times last year, and that number needs to drop for them to be successful.

2010-2011 A&M Aggies Football Predictions: 8-5

This Texas A&M squad has the potential to be quite dangerous this year, but the conference schedule is very tough. They need to win at Oklahoma State on September 30th and start the season 4-0, because the final few games of the season are extremely difficult. I think the defense will still struggle, but they’ll be quite a bit better than last year. Jerrod Johnson and the offense will outscore most of the teams they play.

I think the Aggies will go bowling and have a nice season in 2010.
