SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: TCU Horned Frogs

Coach: Gary Patterson
2009 Record: 12-1

TCU Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +1500

Coach Patterson is an intense man who has delivered results in his decade at Texas Christian University. The Horned Frogs are a perennial contender in the Mountain West and routinely are near the top of the NCAA in total defense. Last season was no different, as they enjoyed a 12-1 season in Fort Worth, going unbeaten until narrowly losing to #6 Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Perhaps the scariest prospect is the fact that Patterson might have his most talented group in years, if ever.

The defense will be tenacious as always and the aerial attack will thrive under the guidance of senior local product Andy Dalton.

Team Strengths:

Dalton is one of the better QBs in college football. He has the pleasure of throwing to seniors Jeremy Kerley and Jimmy Young as well as highly-touted junior Antoine Hicks. To assist further, Dalton has grizzled behemoth OT Marcus Cannon guarding his blind side. While the Frogs are traditionally known for their ground supremacy (think LaDainian Tomlinson), TCU will field a respectable, if unspectacular, stable of runners.

The defense will be everywhere, emphasized by DE Wayne Daniels, LBs Tanner Brock and Tank Carder and outstanding safeties Alex Ibiloye and Tejay Johnson. Kicker Ross Evans is also the best in the conference.

Team Weaknesses:

TCU loses stud pass-rusher Jerry Hughes, so that will doubtlessly be a hole to fill; his 11.5 sacks must be picked up somewhere. Tackling machine Daryl Washington is also gone to the NFL, though TCU boasts plenty of linebacker talent.

The Frogs will likely break in a new offensive tackle, so they will have to make sure he doesn’t get overwhelmed – it’s a good thing Cannon is anchoring the blind side.

Frankly, there’s not a lot to dislike about this squad.

2010-2011 TCU Football Prediction: 12-0

Texas Christian should roll this season, especially given its schedule. This is a team that could definitely handle itself in the Big 12, and Patterson is renowned as a master motivator.

The Frogs open the season in the cavernous Cowboys Stadium against Oregon State.

Provided they handle OSU and a road game in Utah, the Horned Frogs should be crashing the BCS again.
