Coach: Gary Patterson
2008 Record: 11-2

The Frogs may not rake in the highest caliber recruits, but the coaching staff trains them to be stronger and faster than anyone in the MWC.

Consequently, they often flirt with the top spot in the Mountain West. In 2009 TCU will again be among the best non-BCS teams. Patterson always keeps this team fired up and if Texas Christian can prevail in a couple tough road games, the sky is the limit in Fort Worth. Quarterback Andy Dalton is already third all-time on the career passing list, and he’s only a junior. High-regarded soph Antoine Hicks and junior Jimmy Young should be targets that allow Dalton to climb that list. Although short for his position (6″3) senior Marshall Newhouse is a load at left tackle. TCU always has a fast, aggressive defense, highlighted this year by NCAA sack leader Jerry Hughes.

Junior safety Malcolm Williams had orginially signed with Oklahoma.

Team Strengths
TCU has developed a pedigree at tailback with LaDainian Tomlinson, Lonta Hobbs, Aaron Brown and, most recently, Joseph Turner toting the ball. It will surely be a nice complement to Dalton’s arm.

The Frogs also have two seniors returning at cornerback to shore up the secondary.

Team Weaknesses
Other than Hughes, the defensive line is green. The Frogs are also breaking in some new starters on the interior of the offensive line, though Turner and speedy soph Jai Cavness should be able to find holes off-tackle with Newhouse and 6″5, 350 lb right tackle Marcus Cannon. Former QB Marcus Jackson is moving to a safety/linebacker hybrid position; we’ll see how that project pans out.

The Horned Frogs must play Virginia, Clemson and BYU on the road this season; their performance in these contests will prove if Texas Christian belongs with BYU and Boise State in the mid-major elite.

Amazingly, TCU has ranked #1 in the FBS in total defense three of the last nine years. If they keep a performance up like that, the Frogs are legit indeed.

2009 TCU Horned Frogs Record Prediction: 11-2
