The Golden Eagles were a solid team last year, but many experts are looking at this team as one that has a chance to jump in the standings in 2010. Injuries were a real problem a year ago, and if this squad can stay healthy, they have the talent to make some noise. Both the offense and the defense have some extremely talented players, but depth could be an issue.
The Golden Eagles should be improved on both sides of the football this year, but how just how good this team could be is hard to say at this point.

The Golden Eagles get a very beneficial schedule inside Conference USA this year, playing both Houston and East Carolina at home.
The hopes are high in Hattiesburg, and if they don’t produce some impressive results this year, Larry Fedora will start getting some heat.
Team Strengths:
The linebacker unit is definitely the best in the conference, and they are probably one of the top ten in the country. The three starters for Southern Miss are just far more athletic and speedy than most comparable schools. Korey Williams is a beast and should be the leader of the defense. Martez Smith and Ronnie Thornton are both all over the field as well.
DeAndre Brown is one of the best receivers in the entire country, and his huge frame will give Austin Davis a big target to throw to this year. There aren’t going to be many backs in Conference USA that can do much of anything with DeAndre Brown.
The defensive line returns all of their starters from a year ago, and they should be very good. They have a nice combination of size in the middle and speed on the outside. I expect the rushing defense to be one of the top 25 in the country.
Team Weaknesses:
The single biggest weakness on this team is definitely the offensive line. Four of their five starters on the line are gone from last year, so this group will need to step up and fill their shoes. Depending on how long it takes this group to get its act together, the offensive line could hold the offense back.
The team is very young at the running back spot. Their leading returning rusher had just 122 yards a year ago. There is talent here, but it is still raw.
The defensive secondary has shown that it is vulnerable against the pass. The Golden Eagles will need to put pressure on the quarterback or their corners and safeties will likely have trouble with high powered offenses.
2010-2011 Southern Miss Golden Eagles Football Predictions: 9-4
I think the Golden Eagles will take a step forward this year. This team has a ton of talent and really has the potential to make a lot of noise in Conference USA. The biggest wildcard is how the offensive line will play. Circle the game on November 20th against Houston as the most exciting and most important game on the schedule for Southern Mississippi.
The passing game and the solid defense will help this squad progress nicely in 2010.
