San Jose St. Spartans 2013 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2013-14 Football Previews – (MWC) – Spartans

San Jose State’s football program had just two winning seasons between 1993 and 2011, but Mike Macintyre did an amazing job getting this team going in the past couple years. The Spartans had a tremendous 11-2 season that was one for the ages last year.

Mountain West 2013 College Football Previews: San Jose State Spartans (Team Link)
Head Coach: Ron Caragher
2012 Record: 11-2
San Jose State Gambling Odds from BetOnline to win BCS Championship: +2,000 (Part of Field)
San Jose State Gambling Odds from BetOnline to win Mountain West Conference: +1,150

They have a very good nucleus back for 2013, but Macintyre is now in Colorado.

Ron Caragher steps into a program that has a lot of good players, but they are also moving up quite a bit in terms of strength of schedule. The Mountain West Conference is improving, and they’ll have to play far tougher teams than they did last season when the Spartans were a part of the WAC.

How will San Jose State handle the move?

Team Strengths:

David Fales has been an excellent fit at quarterback for the San Jose State Spartans. Fales absolutely lit up the WAC last season. He completed 72.5% of his passes and threw for 4,193 yards and 33 touchdowns while being picked off only nine times. Fales is one of the most accurate passers in the country. He doesn’t have a huge arm, but he is great at short and mid-range passes.

It works nicely for the Spartans that they not only have a great quarterback, but they have some great weapons at the wide receiver spot. Noel Grigsby is the biggest play maker of the bunch. Grigsby had 82 catches for 1,307 yards and nine touchdowns in 2012. He has great chemistry with Fales. The rest of the wide receiver group is very good too with Chandler Jones and Jabari Carr.

The Spartans have a lot of talent in the defensive front seven. Keith Smith is the leader of the defense from his linebacker spot. Travis Raciti and Anthony Larceval are both great run stuffers along the defensive front. The Spartans aren’t easy to run the football against. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Team Weaknesses:

Can anyone run the football and take some pressure off the passing game? The Spartans might have been able to get away with being an all-passing team in the WAC, but I don’t think they’ll be able to do the same in the Mountain West.

The team had virtually no running game last season, and there isn’t much talent in the backfield this year either.

San Jose State has a very good front seven on defense, but the secondary isn’t very deep. There will be a lot more teams who can take advantage of that weakness in the Mountain West this season.

The Spartans are either going to have to improve a whole lot in the secondary, or get a ton of heat on opposing quarterbacks to not let them sit back and pick about this group.

2013-2014 San Jose State Football Prediction: 7-5

San Jose State has a much tougher schedule than they did a year ago, and I see no way this team can get to double digit wins again.

They do have some very talented units, but the Spartans also have some pretty sizable weaknesses on their roster.

Look for a winning season, but don’t expect them to contend with the top teams in the Mountain West.
