2015-2016 Football Previews (Big Ten) – Boilermakers
I feel like Darrell Hazell has had the deck stacked against him at Purdue. Purdue has gone 1-11 and 3-9 in his first two years at the school. They have won only one Big Ten Conference game during those two seasons (last year at Illinois).

Big Ten 2015-2016 College Football Preview – Purdue Boilermakers

I don’t think it’s fair to say Hazell is a bad coach. Danny Hope left this Purdue program in really bad shape and it’s going to take a long time to fix it. Will the Boilermaker faithful have patience?

Right as Hazell arrived, Purdue was losing many of their best players and had a poor recruiting class coming in. Purdue went 1-11 in year one, and bumped up to three wins last year.
The Boilermakers were a much better team last season, but because they were so awful in 2013, that improvement only meant they were slightly more competitive. Can Purdue make any improvements for the 2015 season?
Team Strengths:
The Purdue offensive line looks really good. Purdue should be far more competitive in the interior than they have been in many years. Robert Kugler is a good senior leader at the center spot.

If Purdue can find a good running back to run behind these guys, I think the Boilermakers will be able to move the football on the ground much better than most people would expect.
Purdue has a very good special teams unit. This is an area that Coach Hazell has worked hard to improve, and it’s showing on the field. The team has a reliable kicker, punter, and return units.
Team Weaknesses:
The quarterback spot has been a big disappointment the last couple years. Danny Etling was expected to help this team improve greatly, and he wasn’t very good last year. Etling, Aistom Appleby, and David Blough will all battle for the quarterback spot. Purdue needs improved play here.
The defensive line is in big trouble. Ryan Russell was the star of this group, and he’s now in the NFL. Even with Russell, this unit wasn’t very good. Without him, they will likely be a whole lot worse. In fact, Jalani Phillips is also gone, so the Boilermakers are replacing their top two defensive ends from last season. In the last four years, Purdue hasn’t picked up more than 22 sacks in any single year. The run defense isn’t much better, with Purdue lacking a run stuffing defensive tackle.
Purdue is lacking talent in a big way at the skill positions on offense. Even if one of the quarterbacks steps up and takes the job over clearly, it will be hard for them to have too much success with the lack of players around them. Two of their top three pass catchers from last year are gone and their top two running backs are both gone.
Purdue Boilermakers 2015-2016 Prediction: 4-8
Purdue still isn’t good at all, but they are getting better. The Boilermakers have some winnable games at home this year. They should beat Indiana State. They have a shot against Bowling Green, Minnesota, Illinois, and Indiana.

Purdue should bump up to four wins, but expect them to still get beaten badly by all the top teams in the league.
