Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa St. Cyclones Gambling Prediction & Week 6 Preview

Texas vs Iowa State College Football Spread/Handicapping

After a couple of back to back beatdowns the Texas Longhorns got right a little bit against Kansas State a couple of weeks ago. They have their annual tilt with the Oklahoma Sooners coming up in a couple of weeks so they need to use the practice time and this game to get as ready as possible for the Red River Rivalry.

Iowa State did not get off to a good start thise season losing to FCS Northern Iowa and just plain Iowa before winning their third game against Tulsa. The Cyclones are usually good for one game where they rise up and beat a quality opponent in the conference.

This one is at home and it could easily be “that” game of the 2013 season.

Texas

I don’t want to say that Lane Kiffin and Mack Brown are in the same category but with one already gone it is possible the other might go as well if things don’t improve..quickly. That means Texas absolutely has to beat Iowa State on the road.

The Longhorns have won 9 of the last 10 in the series and usually the games aren’t even close which is what the Longhorns need to be feeling good before playing Oklahoma next week. It looks like QB David Ashe is out again which means that backup Case McCoy is up. In limited time this year he has been OK as a game manager.

With the stable of running backs Texas has and their supposed talent on defense that is all they really need him to be. He is usually pretty good at protecting the ball with a lifetime ratio of 2:1 touchdowns to interceptions. In this one the Longhorns can win playing it very safe and running right at the Cyclones. Iowa State

The Cyclones made the list of teams that have tasted FCS defeat this season. This is hardly a great program but they don’t usually stoop that low. That game was no fluke either as the Cyclones were outgained by nearly 100 yards on the day by Northern Iowa.

Iowa State has a new starting QB this season in Sam Richardson. He has been reasonably effective as the passing game has outpaced the running attack this year. One of the challenges the Cyclones have is that they don’t have any thumpers in the running game – top RBs Aaron Wimberley and James White are each under 5’10 and 200 pounds.

Playing a speed game can work against teams like Tulsa where their offensive line can throw its weight around but in the Big 12 you need a little more beef at the point of attack.

Richardson is a pretty good runner so the Cyclones will hope to mimic the success BYU and their fleet QB had against Texas.

Spread prediction: Texas -7.5
O/U: Under
Score prediction: Texas 31 – Iowa State 13
