Broncos quarterback Joe Southwick threw five touchdowns in Boise State’s 63-14 Week 2 win over Tennessee-Martin, but that beat down wasn’t enough to get the Broncos back into the AP Top 25. Doing that will take time, and the next step in that process is beating up on Air Force.

Boise State’s hurry-up offense kept FCS school Tennessee-Martin guessing all night, helping them to a 49-7 halftime lead, and an eventual victory, their 12th consecutive victory in their home opener. Quarterback Joe Southwick completed 17 of 25 passes for 234 yards before exiting early in the third quarter. Running back Jay Ajavi rushed for 80 yards and two scores on 15 carries. Receiver Shane Williams-Rhodes had a pair of touchdowns as well on seven receptions.

The Bronco defense had a little more trouble than expected against the Skyhawks. The unit allowed Tennessee-Martin to put together a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive following Boise State’s opening touchdown. It wasn’t all bad though. The defense did limit the Skyhawks to just 14 points, and picked off quarterback Dylan Favre, a nephew of Brett Favre, three times. The unit then added a pick-6, stealing one from Jarod Neal, who came into the game to replace Favre.

Air Force’s second game of the season didn’t go quite so well. The team was in the game at halftime, trailing 24-13, but they allowed Utah State to put together an 89-yard scoring drive to start the third quarter, then failed on a fake punt attempt in their own territory on the possession that followed. Jaleel Awini made his first career start at quarterback for the Falcons in the contest, and he couldn’t have started the game any worse than he did, fumbling the opening snap. Awini went on to complete just 4 of 12 for 61 yards throwing the football, but he did add a three-yard touchdown run.

He would be replaced by Karson Roberts in the third quarter. Roberts connected with Jale Robinette on a 37-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Awini made the start because Kale Pearson was out with a knee injury.

The Falcon defense allowed Aggies quarterback Chuckie Keeton to complete 32 of 40 passes for 360 yards and a school record tying five touchdowns.

Boise State has made a habit of beating up on inferior opponents on the blue turf at Bronco Stadium. Air Force is badly overmatched in this contest, so the Broncos should roll.

The Falcons are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games overall, including an 0-5 ATS mark in their last five road contests.

The play: Boise State -23
