And the young gun delivered, rushing for 103 yards, while passing for 86 yards and three scores en route to a 34-0 Oklahoma rout of Louisiana-Monroe.

It was the first time a quarterback surpassed the century mark on the ground in Oklahoma since 2001.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers began their 2013 campaign by edging out lowly William & Mary 24-17 in the game’s final minutes, staving off becoming the latest FBS school that lost its opener to an FCS school.

West Virginia trailed the Griffins 17-7 at the half, but then went to work in the second bracket of the contest, racking up 17 unanswered points to eek out the win.

Senior running back Charles Sims, a Houston transfer, led the way with 120 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries, while junior quarterback Paul Millard made an excellent debut, connecting on 19-of-25 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, however, West Virginia didn’t look much better than they did a year ago, but they did manage to keep their offense in the game by only giving up 309 total yards to a meager Griffins’ offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

And although that number seems reasonable, it could mean big trouble against a offensive powerhouse like Oklahoma.

And although the Sooners didn’t necessarily blow up the scoreboard on Saturday, Knight did throw three TDs, which was good enough outing against Louisiana-Monroe.

Nevertheless, Oklahoma will need to improve its offensive punch against stronger teams, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see more of quarterback Blake Bell as the season wears on, maybe even as early as this weekend.

Defensively, OU had a good outing against ULM and its Sun Belt preseason offensive player of the year, surrendering just 166 total yards.

Matt’s Prediction

This has all the makings of a game that could go two ways.

The Sooners have a stingy defense, but they also have a inexperienced quarterback, that has shown promise and another waiting in the wings.

And even though West Virginia hasn’t looked really impressive defensively, 21 points is a lot to cover here.

I don’t see a lot of scoring, with a single mistake being the deciding factor in this one.

Oklahoma 28 – West Virginia 21
