Ole Miss’s struggles against Alabama were so bad that many questioned whether a former Ole Miss staffer was tipping the team’s plays to help the Tide.

The often potent Ole Miss offense was shutout for the first time since 1998. Quarterback Bo Walace completed 17 of 30 passes for just 159 yards. The ground game didn’t do any better, accumulating just 46 yards on 25 attempts. Running back Jeff Scott entered the contest averaging 9.4 yards per carry but was limited to just 28 yards on eight carries. The team also gave up a safety in the fourth quarter.

The Ole Miss defense had a ton of trouble stopping the run. Alabama running backs T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan Drake combined for 220 yards on the ground to key the Alabama offense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The duo each accounted for a long rushing score, with Yeldon finding pay dirt from 68 yards out, and Drake cashing in on a 50-yard score. Most of the team’s success came in the second half. After being held to just 36 rushing yards in the first half, the team racked up 218 rushing yards in the second half. A.J. McCarron had some success as well, completing 25 of 32 passes for 180 yards, although he did toss a rare interception.

Auburn will have extra time to prepare coming off a bye week. Prior to their bye, the team took on LSU with an undefeated 3-0 record, but the step up in class was too much for Auburn, who lost the game 35-21. Tre Mason was the offensive star for Auburn, rushing for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Marshall completed 17 of 33 yards for 224 yards with two interceptions, adding 46 yards rushing. A positive for the Tigers to build on is their ability to continue to fight after falling behind 21-0 early in the game.

The Auburn defense had a ton of trouble with LSU standout running back Jeremy Hill, who rushed for 184 yards and three scores, including one from 49 yards out. The defensive secondary did hold LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger to his worst outing of the season though, allowing him to complete just 14 of 22 passes for 229 yards, and forcing him to throw his first interception of the season.

Ole Miss looked out of place when they took on Alabama a week ago, but Auburn is no Alabama. Expect the Rebels to get back on track when they face a Tiger team that couldn’t handle the step up in competition themselves in their last game.

The favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings between these teams.

The play: Ole Miss -3
