Michigan State

The Michigan State Spartans just keep finding a way to stay unbeaten. It wasn’t pretty at all last week at Northwestern, but they got the job done. This will be their stiffest test of the year thus far. Can Michigan State keep their national title hopes alive?

Michigan State’s offense is balanced and tough to stop. They average 255 yards per game through the air and 194 yards per game on the ground. Kirk Cousins has been great this year, especially in the last three games. Cousins has thrown five touchdowns and not had a pass picked off in the last three games. The Spartans have a pair of terrific tailbacks in Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell. Bell is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and Baker is averaging 6.8 yards per carry. The offensive line is solid, but they’ll have a tough matchup this week against Iowa’s tremendous defensive line.

The Spartans defense is much improved from a year ago. They are only allowing 18 points per game. Greg Jones is the leader of this defense, and he just might be the best middle linebacker in college football. The defensive secondary is still the weak spot for this team, but so far they have done a nice job covering up this weakness. The Iowa receivers are very talented, so Michigan State will need to put pressure on Ricky Stanzi and help their secondary.

Iowa

The Iowa Hawkeyes are a very good football team, but they have now lost two games already this year. Last weekend’s home loss to Wisconsin was a comedy of errors for a team that is normally extremely sound fundamentally. This team still has a chance in the Big Ten, but they must win this game.

The Iowa offense is led by senior quarterback Ricky Stanzi. Stanzi has had an amazing year in 2010. He has already thrown 16 touchdown passes while getting picked off only twice. Last year Stanzi was intercepted 15 times, but he has committed himself to taking care of the ball this year. Johnson-Koulianos and McNutt give the Hawkeyes two very talented receivers who can get open constantly. The rushing game has suffered a bit from the loss of Jewel Hampton, but Adam Robinson is a tough runner and he has done a great job this season.

The Hawkeyes defense is very good, but they have stumbled a bit in Iowa’s two losses. This is a defense that has the ability to dominate, but they have only done that at times this year. The defensive line is probably the most talented in America, but they were beaten by Wisconsin last weekend.  Tyler Sash is a great safety, but Iowa is a little weak at the cornerback position this year. Even with last weekend’s poor showing, this unit is only allowing 15.7 points per game this year.

The Pick:

The Michigan State Spartans are a very good team, but I don’t think they are the fifth best team in the country. Eventually their weak secondary will hurt them, and I think it is this week. Iowa should be extra motivated for this one, and I like the Hawkeyes to cover here.

Michigan State vs. Iowa Score Prediction: Iowa 28 Michigan State 17
