Navy

The Navy Midshipmen have actually won two of the last three meetings with Notre Dame.  Navy has been a slight disappointment this year, losing to both Maryland and Air Force. This is a big game for this team in their effort to get it going in the right direction once again.

The Midshipmen offense is run by senior quarterback Ricky Dobbs. Dobbs isn’t having a bad year, but it is a little down compared to last season. Dobbs is averaging 2.9 yards per carry, down from 3.8 last year. Dobbs is only completing 48.6% of his passes on the year. This is still the ninth best rushing attack in the nation, but they aren’t quite gashing teams the way they have in the past couple years. I would expect this offensive line to improve in their blocking schemes as the year moves along, and this offense will likely be even better by the end of this year.

The Navy defense has done a nice job so far this year. This unit is ranked 18th in the nation in points allowed per game as they give up just 18.2 points on average. The secondary is full of veterans who know their role, which allows this unit to be one of the best in the nation against the pass.

The linebackers are inexperienced and that has been the largest weakness of this defense thus far this year.

Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame have been improving as the season goes along. They have won three straight after starting 1-3. Brian Kelly’s team must continue to progress if they are going to get into a decent bowl game this year.

Dayne Crist is the main reason Notre Dame has been able to have success on offense this year. Crist has already thrown 14 touchdowns this year and he has only five interceptions. Crist has provided that consistent solid leader that this team needs. Armando Allen is a little dinged up, but he will probably play on Saturday. This offense hasn’t been too dynamic this year because they haven’t been able to stay balanced. In order to be a very good offense, Notre Dame will need to run the ball more effectively.

The Notre Dame defense hasn’t been up to par so far this season. The defense lacks the team speed necessary to contend against the best teams in the nation. The Fighting Irish are 82nd in the nation in total defense, allowing 386 yards per game. The pass defense has been terrible. Notre Dame even allowed 277 yards through the air to Western Michigan last Saturday. Right now this defense just isn’t performing as well as they must. If this unit doesn’t improve, this team will be behind the eight ball against the best teams on their schedule.

The Pick:

I expect both defenses to struggle in this game. The Midshipmen should be able to run the ball well against this Notre Dame front seven. At the same time, Navy’s inexperienced linebackers will likely struggle with this Notre Dame offense. I like the over in this one.

In response to Kyle Hunter’s ND vs. Navy prediction: First off , I am a tremendous ND fan, but with much respect for Navy, Army, and Air Force. That being said, I agree with the summary of Navy’s defense, but offensively…they obviously arent producing like they did last year, yet they are still not an underdog by any means. Once they get going on offense, there is no stopping them, it just becomes a matter of which offense scores more points.

On the otherside, ND’s offense has by no means been successful averaging 27 points a game, and Dayne Crist has been the number one contributor to their lack of offense. I realize that Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen are tough acts to follow, but this kid has shown no improvement and no leardership after 7 games, 5 of which he had home field advantage. He could easily have 20 passing TDs by now if he had even average accuracy. Dayne Crist is by no means a ND quarterback. And even though NDs defense has been playing just good enough to get the win, thats a huge improvement since last year. in fact their defense hasnt been as good as it is now since 2003.

ND 38 Navy 31

Bill,

Thanks for the comment. I think we are in agreement that this one should be a shootout. I think Crist is a pretty decent player, and he is still new to Brian Kelly’s system, so he should improve. This should be a good matchup. Enjoy the game!

um…not too good on this one…Navy is crushing the Irish, not even close. Being at a neutral site is a huge advantage for the Mids, they always kick it up a notch in front of an 80k strong crowd.

Now, who wins the GA v FL game next week? Both teams are terrible, but the Swamp always goes off…should be an interesting one.
