Central Florida
Central Florida is very good but they don’t usually beat teams 42-7 like they did last week against UAB. When you look closely it should have been a closer game but UCF was able to make two scores on defense. They probably own the best defense in Conference USA. That usually doesn’t say much but in this case it does. They held NC State to ten points below their season average and Daniel Thomas, one of the nations best running back to only 76 yards., in a close loss to K-State Their defense is for real.
The question for UCF is whether the offense will be able to match the defensive effort. They lost their best RB before the season started but that hasn’t been the problem as they are ranked 32 in the nation at just under 200 yards rushing per game. The problem has been passing. They are 100th in the nation and aren’t even cracking 200 yards per game. This puts even more pressure on the D because this team simply can not come from behind.
Central Florida should be looking forward to facing Marshall this week. Not only is it another chance to shine on national TV but they have just owned the Thundering Herd of late. UCF has won the last 5 in row in the series and is 5-1 ATS over the last six. The Knights have yet to lose a conference game this season and are a favourite to challenge ECU in the C-USA East division. 
Marshall
The Thundering Herd have only one win but they could easily be 3-2 just like UCF. A couple of plays here and there and losses to West Virginia and Ohio could easily have been victories. Despite the poor record there is still a lot of football left to play for Marshall. They have played only one conference game (a loss to Southern Miss) so if they can win this week they can be in the thick of it within the C-USA East.
Last week’s loss to Southern Miss was a bad one. They managed only 170 total yards on offense and their normally stout defense abandoned them as they gave up more than 200 yards on the ground. Marshall is a gritty club but grit doesn’t get you very far in a league with flashy offenses. UCF is the rare exception in C-USA in that they prefer to pound opponents into submission so Marshall may get just the type of game they are looking for.
The problem is UCF is much better at that formula than the Thundering Herd. UCF is the better team and even though they do not usually score points in bunches they can dominate you just the same. The series history has been documented above but last year’s game is a great example. UCF outgained the Herd by more than 100 yards but only put up the single point necessary to gain the victory. A similar scenario could play out on Wednesday.
The Pick: I like UCF in this spot as long as it stay below a TD. They should have little trouble stopping the Thundering Herd attack but won’t blow them out unless Marshall gets sloppy.
