Michigan State

The Spartans are coming off two huge wins over Notre Dame and Wisconsin. This time they must travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines. Michigan State has a real chance at making noise in the Big Ten standings this year, but this is a game they need to win in order to finish at the top.

Michigan State’s offense has a very steady signal caller at the helm, which really makes them tick. Kirk Cousins is the type of quarterback that can make all the throws necessary, but his decision making is his best attribute. The running game of Michigan State has been superb all year. Edwin Caper is averaging 7.1 yards per carry, and Le’Veon Bell is averaging 7.4 yards per carry this season. The two have combined for 11 rushing touchdowns already this season. This Spartans offense is extremely balanced, which should help them be a real contender all year long.

The Michigan State defense has been very good against the run, but they are pretty weak in the secondary. Greg Jones leads a terrific trio of linebackers, but the secondary just isn’t good in coverage and is often beaten deep.

So far this year the team has done a good job of minimizing the damage and allowing just 18.6 points per game, but this is a defense that could struggle quite a bit against great offenses.

Michigan

The Wolverines have started out 2010 on fire, and they look like a team that could be one of the biggest turnaround teams in the country. Rich Rodriguez named Denard Robinson the starter before the season and Robinson has absolutely wowed the country for the first five games.

Robinson would likely win the Heisman Trophy if it was voted on right now, and it would be tough to argue against him. He has 1,008 yards passing and 905 yards rushing through just five games. Denard has absolutely taken over both the Notre Dame game and the Indiana game right when his team has needed him the most. Michigan is currently ranked second in total yards per game in the nation, and this offense is loaded. The line is improving each game, and the wide receivers are a deep and very talented group. The one spot that remains a bit of a question is the running back position. This is one of the best offenses in the country.

The Wolverines defense was a huge problem a year ago, and they still aren’t very strong this year. Thus far they have improved quite a bit when it comes to stopping the run, but this weekend will be a huge test for the front seven. The problem so far this season has been slowing down the aerial attack. Michigan is giving up 308 yards through the air per game, which will definitely come back to haunt them if they don’t improve on that. The front seven needs to get some more heat on the quarterback to take the pressure off an injury depleted secondary.

The Pick:

This is an extremely difficult game to predict, because both squads are great on offense, but they have both have some defensive issues. Michigan’s offense is a quick strike offense, while Michigan State will likely have long drives. I’m going to take the Spartans to cover the spread in this one, because I think their run defense will slow down Robinson at least a little bit.
