Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns Preview

In a non-conference game on Friday night on ESPN the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns host the 22nd ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. College football lines have Oklahoma State as 23-point favorites in this game with a total that has yet to be posted.

This game could get real ugly, as Oklahoma State has the nation’s 3rd ranked rushing offense and Louisiana-Lafayette only has the nation’s 103rd ranked pass defense giving up an average of 257.25 yards through the air per game. Not only that, but the Ragin’ Cajuns got killed by Georgia is their opening game and then faced 3 FBS teams. They beat North Texas in their last game, but needed a block on an extra point at the end of the game to get it.

The Cowboys have the nation’s 2nd ranked scoring offense averaging 52.3 points per game. They may have to light up the scoreboard since their defense only ranks 96th in the nation. They have given up an average of 33 points per game in their last 3 games.

Heading into this non-conference game OSU is 3-1 ATS and Louisiana-Lafayette is 2-2 ATS.

In their last games Louisiana-Lafayette beat North Texas 28-27 and Oklahoma State beat Texas A&M 38-35.

The Rajin’ Cajuns have not fared well in games outside of the Sun Belt Conference, as they are only 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. However, in the last several years they have played well against teams from the Big 12 going 9-4 in their last 13 games against teams from that conference.

Besides Georgia Louisiana-Lafayette has played 3 FBS teams and they still only rank 69th in their passing offense and 103rd in their rushing offense. They are led by QB Chris Masson, who had a good game against North Texas passing for 310 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT.

Luckily he will be facing a weak OSU pass defense that only ranks 110th in the nation and last week against Texas A&M they gave up 409 passing yards.

With the dynamic offense that OSU has Mason will have to light up the scoreboard and he will likely have to do it all himself since the Rajin’ Cajuns do not have a good rushing attack. He has to be careful with his throws, as even though the Cowboys’ secondary has struggled this season they did have 4 INT in the win over Texas A&M.

For the Cajuns to have any chance to win this game their offensive line has to protect Mason, but they have not played well this season giving up 14 sacks, which ranks 114th in the nation out of 120 teams.

Oklahoma State has covered the spread in 2 of the 3 non-conference games they have played this season and this game is their first road game of the season.

OSU and their high-powered passing offense is led by QB Brandon Weeden, who already has 13 TD this season and in the win over Texas A&M he passed for 284 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT. His main targets are the WR tandem of Justin Blackmon (34 receptions 574 yards 9 TD) and Josh Cooper (21 receptions 254 yards 1 TD). All these guys may put up huge numbers against a weak Rajin Cajuns’ pass defense.

The Cowboys also have RB Kendall Hunter, who has 8 TD this season and is averaging a legit 7 yards per carry. Louisiana-Lafayette only has the nation’s 67th ranked rushing defense and their front line D is a bit undersized.

The Rajin’ Cajuns have given up an average of 30 points per game this season and they will have a tough time keeping OSU from scoring twice that many points in this game. The Cowboys will score a ton of points in this game, but can they play any defense? OSU will win this game and they will actually play some D or just enough where they will cover the spread.

Betting Trends:

Oklahoma State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game, has an Over record of 4-0 in their last 4 games, and has an Under record of 11-2 in their last 13 road games. Louisiana-Lafayette is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against teams that have a winning record and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.

Pick: Oklahoma State -23
