Wyoming

The Cowboys may only have a couple of wins but they have played one of the most difficult schedules in the nation to date (this week won’t exactly be easy either).  Thus far they have lost to Texas, Boise State and Air Force while beating Toledo and Southern Utah.  From what we have seen so far it seems unlikely that Wyoming will find themselves in a bowl again but it is not completely hopeless at this point.

Wyoming is led yb QB Austyn Carta-Samuels, who definitely needs a catchy nickname.  He is a very athletic QB who last year was able to find the magic from time to time to get the Cowboys over the hump.  He has talent but has regressed in his sophomore season, having already matched his interception total from a year ago.  Not helping much is the fact that Wyoming has the third worst rushing attack in the nation.  They are averaging only 68 yards per game and Carta-Samuels doesn’t have the weapons to beat team through the air alone.  They need balance to have success.

TCU has won the last 2 in the series covering both times as 30 point favourites.  You may think that means that the Cowboys lie down when the Horned Frogs appear on the schedule but they actually beat TCU in 2007.

However, it should be noted that they were actually favoured in that home game which, given the state of these programs today, is a bit shocking.

TCU

Right now it kind of sucks to be the Horned Frogs.  Sure they are 5-0 and ranked 5th in the nation but every one wants to know why they aren’t completely crushing teams souls.  Last week they beat Colorado State 27-0 and held them to a paltry 161 yards, which by the way is 70 yards below their third ranked defense’s average, and all anyone can talk about is how they are losing ground in the great BCS Buster race.  I think if they finish undefeated they will have plenty to argue about at the end of the year.

Contributing to this conversation will be the result of this game.  Similar to Oregon State, Wyoming will be a common opponent for Boise and TCU this season.  Wyoming lost 51-6 to Boise earlier so it will be interesting to see if Gary Patterson changes his tune and tries to rev up the score a little bit if he can.  I think that is unlikely but the Horned Frogs are still a good bet to cover against Wyoming on Saturday.

TCU is one of the most complete teams in the country.  They can score (41ppg) and defend (12ppg) and have one of the most experienced leaders in the country in QB Andy Dalton.  From time to time they may play down to their competition but they still succeed in exerting their dominance in every game.  It just seems like they have no interest in playing the style points game.  It doesn’t make them any less good but it does make them dangerous to back when there are big points on the board.

The Pick: After getting so much heat last week I think that TCU will be a little more aware of expectations this week.  It helps that Wyoming may push them a little more than Colorado State could.
