Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Iowa State Cyclones Preview

This Saturday night in the Hawkeye State in a Big 12 battle the Iowa State Cyclones (2-2) host the Texas Tech Red Raiders (2-1). College betting lines have Texas Tech as 7-point favorites in this game with a total of 52.

This is the second game in the Big 12 for both teams and while every conference game is important this one is really important for the Cyclones and the Red Raiders, who are both 0-1 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech has had a lot of time to prepare for this game after getting last week off.

This game marks the killer part of the schedule for the Cyclones, as after playing a solid Tech team they face Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas in the next 3 games and all of those teams are currently ranked in the top 25.

Iowa State does not rank in the top 80 in the nation in passing yards per game or rushing yards per game and their defense only ranks 63rd. Their defense may have got some confidence after their last game when they shutout Northern Iowa.

These 2 teams are in the Big 12, but play in different divisions and the last time they faced each other was 2007 when Texas Tech killed Iowa State 42-17.

In their last games Texas Tech lost to in-state rival Texas 24-14 while Iowa State beat Northern Iowa 27-0.

Heading into this conference game Iowa State is 2-2 ATS and Texas Tech is 1-2 ATS.

Once again, Texas Tech is led by their passing offense that ranks 23rd in the nation averaging 275 yards per game through the air. However, they were grounded by Texas only gaining 158 passing yards. QB Taylor Potts is THE man for the Red Raiders, but he would like to forget the Texas game, as he not only threw for a paltry 158 yards, but he had 2 INT and only 1 TD.

Potts has to be careful with his throws, as the Iowa State secondary had 2 INT returned for TD’s in their win over Northern Iowa.

Iowa State has the nation’s 10th ranked pass defense and if they play well they have a great chance to beat Tech.

The Red Raiders had -16 rushing yards in the loss to Texas, but they should improve upon that total, I should hope so, against a weak Iowa State run defense that only ranks 108th in the nation and last week gave up 157 yards on the ground to a weak Northern Iowa team.

Texas Tech may want to run the ball in this game, as even though the passing game is obviously their strength the Cyclones gave up over 500 rushing yards combined in their 2 losses this season.

Luckily the Iowa State defense bailed their offense out in the Northern Iowa game, as NIU had more total yards, passing yards, and rushing yards, but they committed 5 turnovers.

In the Northern Iowa game the Cyclones had QB second stringer Jerome Tiller under center, but starter Austen Arnaud is expected to start against Texas Tech. He has a hand injury and should be ready by this Saturday and Iowa State sure hopes so, as Tiller only had 87 passing yards in the Northern Iowa win. Arnaud is not only the main QB, but he is also the second leading rusher for the Cyclones this season.

Arnaud has 590 passing yards with 2 TD this season, but has 5 picks. He will be facing the weakness of the Texas Tech D, which is their pass defense that only ranks 100th in the nation. In the loss to Texas the Red Raiders’ did give up 227 passing yards, but they did have 3 INT in the game.

RB Alexander Robinson had 74 yards with 1 TD averaging a legit 4.9 yards per carry against Northern Iowa and he will be facing a good Tech rushing D that ranks 22nd in the nation.

Even though Iowa State has a solid ranking pass defense they have not played anybody near as tough as run-and-gun Texas Tech. Sure, The Red Raiders have their issues on defense, when do they not, but their offense is too strong for Iowa State and they will come out and win this away game and cover the spread moving to .500 for the season in the Big 12.

Betting Trends:

Texas Tech is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss and has an Under record of 5-0 in their last 5 Big 10 games.
Iowa State is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Under record of 8-0 in their last 8 home games.

Pick: Texas Tech -7
