The Miami Hurricanes are out of the BCS championship running but, if last week was any indication, they’re over it. Their defense led the way as they romped Pittsburgh 31-3 in an impressive road win. They sacked Tino Sunseri five times and held Pitt to 232 total yards.
However, even the victory highlighted Miami’s biggest disappointment so far this season: Jacory Harris. The Heisman Trophy hopeful has been anything but through three games. In Week 2’s disastrous loss to Ohio State, he threw four interceptions. While Harris was better last week against Pittsburgh, throwing for 248 yards and two scores, he added two more picks to his line. That gives the Hurricanes’ leader six touchdown passes and six interceptions on the season. That’s just not good enough and it doesn’t bode well against Clemson’s solid secondary this week.
At least the ’Canes can also do damage on the ground; Damien Berry has rushed for 226 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He hasn’t exploded for that huge game but perhaps that’s simply because he isn’t getting the rock enough. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Clemson Tigers (2-1)
Clemson hasn’t been perfect in 2010 but the Tigers are probably happy with their start – mainly because of what they’ve seen from quarterback Kyle Parker. After choosing to stay with the team rather than join the Colorado Rockies in Major League Baseball, he looks like he made the right decision so far.
The Tigers aren’t throwing a ton yet; they lean heavily on their rushing attack, which averages 215 yards per game. But they’re slowly but surely taking the reins off Parker and he’s flashed plenty of potential so far. Parker has six touchdown passes versus just one interception this season. Imagine where Miami would be if Harris had that kind of ratio.
Even though Clemson lost a heartbreaker to Auburn last week, Parker had somewhat of a coming out party, throwing for 227 yards and two scores and helping Clemson fly out to a 17-0 lead (which they blew).
The pick:
Miami fans and bettors should be legitimately worried about Harris. He’s talented but can’t stop making mistakes. Against a Clemson team that has nine sacks in three games, he’ll feel the heat again.
But Harris is at least experienced; he’ll make a few bonehead throws but he’ll make some plays too, as he did at Pittsburgh last week. Parker has a bright future but I don’t think he’s ready to handle what Miami will throw at him defensively. Sunseri had sparkling numbers before the Hurricanes dismantled him last week. Pittsburgh’s Dion Lewis is also just as dangerous if not more dangerous than anything Clemson will throw at Miami on the ground – with respect to Andre Ellington. If Miami bottled up Lewis, it can handle Ellington.
Expect a hard-fought game where defense, not offense, takes center stage. Miami should grind out a tough win – and this game should fall under the total.
