Wyoming Cowboys vs. Toledo Rockets Preview

In a non-conference game this Saturday night in the Buckeye State the Toledo Rockets (1-3) host the Wyoming Cowboys (1-3). College football lines have Toledo as 3.5 favorites in this game with a total of 49.

In their respective conferences Toledo is 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference and Wyoming is 0-1 in the Mountain West Conference.

Wyoming got off to a good start winning their first game, but they have dropped 3 in a row. However, the Cowboys may not be as bad as their 1-3 record indicates since they have played 3 solid teams, 2 of which were ranked in the top 5 in the nation at the time in Texas and TCU. Their offense has really struggled this season, as they do not rank in the top 90 in the nation in rushing or passing offense.

Toledo dropped their opening game of the season to 14th ranked Arizona, but they have won 3 games in a row including a solid win over Purdue of the Big 10 last week and all 3 wins have been on the road. The Rockets’ offense has looked good in their last 2 games scoring at least 31 points in each. Toledo is off to a good start at 3-1 looking for their first winning season since 2005 when they went 9-3 and won the GMAC Bowl.

In their last games Toledo beat Purdue 31-20 and Wyoming lost to Air Force 20-14.

Heading into this non-conference game Wyoming is 2-2 ATS and Toledo is 3-1 ATS.

Toledo only has the nation’s 104th passing offense, but in the win over Purdue last week QB Austin Dantin had a solid game going 24/31 for 209 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT and le led the Rockets to 9/15 on 3rd down conversions. He is a duel-threat QB that had 64 yards rushing yards against Purdue with 2 TD.

Wyoming ranks 70th in the nation on pass defense and they really did not need to play any last week in the loss to Air Force, who rarely pass the ball only netting 66 yards through the air.

Toledo’s main strength on offense is rushing the ball and last week they were solid running the ball with 169 yards. They have a decent backfield with RB Adonis Thomas (188 rushing yards this season) and QB Dantin.

The run offense of Toledo has to be the main concern of Wyoming since they only rank 116th in rushing defense and last week they simply could not stop the run allowing Air Force to run for 379 yards.

Wyoming was in a good position to win last week, but they fumbled late in the game. With the weak defense they have they cannot turn the ball over to Toledo this Saturday night.

The Cowboys and their 91st ranked passing offense is led by QB Austyn Carta-Samuels, who is also a duel-threat QB and last week in the loss to Air force he was 6/11 for 66 yards with 0 TD and 1 INT and ran for 60 yards averaging a legit 10 yards per carry. Basically how Carta-Samuels goes the Cowboys go, as he has to play well for the Cowboys to have any chance of winning this game.

After struggling on for the first 3 games of the season Cowboys’ RB Alvester Alexander blew up last week and rushed for 123 yards and 1 TD.

Basically, if Toledo can stop the run they will be in good shape. That is a good thing for them since their rushing defense ranks 17th in the nation, but they did give up 220 yards on the ground against Purdue last week.

Both teams may be better than their stats indicate, especially Wyoming since they have played such a tough schedule.

Trends:

Wyoming is 7-0 ATS in their last 7 road games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog, and has an Under record of 7-3 in their last 10 road games.
Toledo is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10 and has an Over record of 5-0 in their 5 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.

Pick: I think Wyoming will come and play well in a close game and while they may not win they will, at least, cover the 3.5-point spread.
