Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Wisconsin Badgers Gambling Preview + Predictions

The Nebraska Cornhuskers receive a special welcome to the Big Ten Conference by being forced to play at Camp Randall Stadium this Saturday. The Cornhuskers fan base travels extremely well, and the Badgers faithful will be rocking in this Saturday night game in Madison.

I don’t think there will be a better atmosphere for college football anywhere. This game has been circled as the top game in the Big Ten for months. Will the game live up to the hype?

Nebraska has been quite underwhelming so far this year despite their 4-0 start. Unexpected tough battles at home against Fresno State and Washington came as a big surprise. Nebraska’s defense was supposed to be one of the best in the nation, but they have been poor so far this season. The Cornhuskers currently rank ninth out of the twelve Big Ten teams in total defense. Jared Crick will return from an injury this week, and the team hopes the return of its best defensive lineman will give the defense a big boost.

Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska running game have been terrific so far in 2011. Rex Burkhead is a quality runner who fights hard for every single yard. Martinez is averaging 6.7 yards per carry, and he already has seven rushing touchdowns. While the running game is dominating, the passing game is below average. Martinez is completing just 50.6% of his passes, and Nebraska is averaging only 166 passing yards per contest.

Brett Bielema’s Wisconsin Badgers absolutely steamrolled through their non-conference schedule. Russell Wilson has been brilliant as the team’s new starting quarterback. Wilson has completed 76% of his passes, and he has a stellar 11 to 1 touchdown/interception ratio. Wilson gives the team a quarterback who can stretch the field with the deep pass, which is something they haven’t had much of in the past few years. The strength of this Badgers team is once again the offensive front and the running game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Montee Ball and James White form one of the nation’s best tailback tandems. Jacob Pederson has stepped up as a legitimate threat in the red zone for the passing attack. Wisconsin has one of the most balanced offenses in the country.

While few people doubted the Wisconsin offense, there were quite a few questions about this defense before the season began. The Badgers defense currently ranks seventh in the nation in total defense. This unit has certainly impressed so far this season, but the level of competition hasn’t been that great. It will be interesting to see if this front seven can consistently stop the run against Nebraska this weekend.

I believe Wisconsin is the better team, but I can’t lay nine points in a game of this magnitude. Both running games should rack up quite a few yards in this one. Don’t be surprised if there are several big plays made by both offenses. I like this one to go over the posted total.
