The Rockets of Toledo were absolutely embarrassed on ESPN in their season opener at home against Arizona, but they have bounced back extremely well by winning two straight. Toledo beat both Ohio and Western Michigan, quality MAC teams, on the road in consecutive weeks. This week they must face the Boilermakers from the Big Ten Conference.
Toledo’s offense consists of quite a few short passes from Austin Dantin to backs out of the backfield as well as wide receivers on crossing routes or screens. The Rockets have decided to run the football more this year as well, with David Fluellen getting the majority of the carries. While Toledo has won their last two games, this offense still hasn’t been very successful. In those wins they had just 212 and 268 yards of total offense. The Rockets need to develop a passing game down the field to keep the defense honest.
Toledo’s defense has given up quite a few yards this year, but they have been extremely opportunistic. In the last two games Toledo has forced 10 turnovers, which has really been the difference between them being 0-3 right now and their actual record of 2-1. In just three games this Toledo defense has racked up eight interceptions. In the long run, it is extremely unlikely they’ll be able to keep taking the ball away so often.
Purdue
The Boilermakers of Purdue also lost their season opener and have come back to win their next two games. Danny Hope’s team has the talent to make some noise this year, but they haven’t played up to their potential yet.
The Purdue offense, especially the passing game, hasn’t been able to get going yet this year. Robert Marve has been inconsistent and the Boilermakers are playing without their star receiver, Keith Smith, who will be out for the season with a knee injury. The running game will probably have to shoulder more of the load, but Ralph Bolden is also injured. Al-Terek McBurse missed last week’s game, but he is expected to be ready for this one. Purdue must find a way to improve their offensive output.
The Purdue defense has played quite well this year. They have been allowing their opponents to convert on third down more than 40% of the time, so they must improve that number. The front seven is strong and they have been doing a solid job of stuffing the run. The Purdue secondary is a bit of question mark, but they have held up fairly well so far this season. This defense is athletic and quick to the football, so they should be pretty solid all year long.
The Pick:
Purdue definitely has more talent than Toledo, but the loss of Keith Smith really limits this offense. I don’t expect Toledo to be able to run the ball on Purdue, so they’ll need Dantin to get the ball downfield more. In the end, I think the under is the best play in this one. It is quite likely that this will be a fairly ugly football game as both offenses are struggling mightily right now.
