Miami (OH) RedHawks vs. Missouri Tigers Preview

In a non-conference match up this Saturday afternoon the Missouri Tigers (3-0) host the Miami of Ohio RedHawks (2-1). College betting lines have Missouri as 18-point favorites in this game with a total of 52.5.

Nobody has really talked about Missouri doing much in the Big 12 this season, but if they win this game they will be 4-0 heading into conference play. They face Colorado next week and Texas A&M in 2 weeks and then they come to the make or break part of their season playing Oklahoma and Nebraska, who are both ranked in the top 10.

Miami of Ohio has bounced back after their season opening loss to 4th ranked Florida with 2 straight wins. While the RedHawks offense is not a dynamic one, to say the least, their defense is solid ranking 26th in the nation. They face a tough test this Saturday against a great passing offense of Mizzou.

In their last games Missouri beat San Diego State and Miami of Ohio looked solid crushing Colorado State 31-10.

Heading into this non-conference match up Missouri is 1-2 ATS and Miami (OH) is 2-1 ATS.

The Tigers did not look great in the win over San Diego State, as they committed 3 turnovers, gave up 440 yards, and were only 5/16 on 3rd down conversions.

Mizzou has the nation’s 16th ranked passing offense led by QB Blaine Gabbert, but even though he had 351 yards passing in the win over San Diego State he had 2 INT and only 1 TD. He will be facing a RedHawks defense that is good, but is much better against the run (ranking 5th) than against the pass (ranking 75th). Last week against Colorado St. the RedHawks gave up 305 passing yards, but held them to only 1 rushing yard.

The Miami (OH) secondary has to have good coverage on the Tigers’ duo of TE Michael Egnew and WR T.J. Moe, who both averaged at least 11 yards per reception in last week’s win. Moe is the guy that can really hurt them and the RedHawks cannot allow him to make the big play down the field.

The RedHawks front line D has to pressure Gabbert, but they are not great at the pass rush only having 5 sacks in their first 3 games.

Miami may have to win this game with their defense since their passing offense only ranks 77th in the nation and their rushing offense only ranks 109th. In the win over Colorado St. Miami was out-gained in yards, but their defense came up huge and they forced 4 turnovers.

The Miami offense is led by QB Zac Dysert, who played well against Colorado St. going 18/22 for 231 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT. He has a decent corps of receivers and in this game he will be facing a Mizzou pass defense that is solid ranking 22nd in the nation.

The RedHawks do not feature a very strong rushing offense and in the win over Colorado St. they only had 68 yards. However, they will be facing the weakness of the Mizzou D, which is their run defense that only ranks 81st in the nation and last week gave up 250 yards on the ground against San Diego St.

Missouri did not play great against San Diego St, but they will not play poorly at home for 2 games in a row. Miami of Ohio does have a solid defense, but Mizzou has too many weapons on offense while the RedHawks’ offense is mediocre at best so they will likely not light up the scoreboard. Mizzou will come out and play well easily winning this game and covering the spread.

Miami of Ohio is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games, 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Under record of 6-0 in their last 6 non-conference games.

Missouri is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games, and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games, 3-13 ATS in their last 16 home games, and has an Under record of 8-0 in their last 8 non-conference games.

Pick: Missouri -18

Jason did OK last week going 4-4 for the week in the college game and while he has yet to be below .500 for any of the 3 weeks he wishes the Redskins could have played some D against the Texans in losing their first game of the season to the Lone Star State.
