Over the last few years Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina teams have been serial disappointers. So far this year this looks like a team that could finally meet or even exceed expectations. The game at Auburn is their biggest test yet.

South Carolina’s offense is benefiting greatly from their freshman star, Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore has burst onto the scene and appears to be ready to carry the load already. Lattimore is averaging 111 yards on the ground per game so far this year. Alshon Jeffery has become the main target on the outside, and he is averaging 102 receiving yards per game this season. With Lattimore and Jeffery having such great seasons, it appears that Stephen Garcia is feeling more comfortable at the quarterback spot. The offensive line is the biggest question mark for the Gamecocks offense. As the season goes, the line must hold up against some very tough defensive fronts in the SEC.

The Gamecocks defense has been very solid so far this year. South Carolina ranks first in the SEC against the run, allowing just 59 yards on the ground per game. This rushing defense will definitely be tested in a matchup against the best running attack in the SEC. The Gamecocks also have a pair of terrific corners, who are great at jumping a route and forcing interceptions. As a whole, this should be the stronger of the two units for South Carolina in 2010.

Auburn

Auburn won a hard fought game against Clemson last weekend and enters this key game at 3-0. Gene Chizik and his Tigers are battle tested, but they may have their toughest opponent yet on the schedule this weekend.

The Auburn offense is led by sensational newcomer Cameron Newton. Newton is absolutely an imposing force at 6’6 and 255 pounds. On the year so far he is averaging 6.2 yards per carry.

He has a strong arm, but at this point he still prefers to run the football when given the opportunity.

The Tigers also have a great backfield trio of McCalebb, Dyer, and Fannin. All three of these backs are dynamic and they can catch the ball out of the backfield. The offensive line has proven to be one of the best in the SEC. This Auburn offense will show all kinds of different formations and they will be very tough to defend for every opponent they face.

The Auburn defense is definitely the weaker link of this team, but they are improving quite a bit this year.

The defense has only forced two turnovers in three games so far this year, so they need to be a little more opportunistic. The run defense hasn’t been tested by a strong running game this year, but Lattimore and the Gamecocks will certainly provide a challenge. Craig Stevens and Josh Bynes are great linebackers that provide some great leadership for this defensive unit.

The Pick:

The SEC has some great matchups this week, and this is probably the best out of all of them. South Carolina is out to prove they are for real, but Auburn is very difficult to beat at home.
