The No. 19 Stanford Cardinal are off to a blazing 3-0 start and lead the PAC-10 with their first conference win over the UCLA Bruins in Week 3.

Stanford has been nothing short of impressive, outscoring their opponents 155-31 through three games including a 68-24 shellacking of Wake Forest last weekend.

The Cardinal offense amassed 535 yards, and was led once again by dual-threat QB Andrew Luck who contributed four touchdowns and rushed for a score while completing 17-of-23 passes for 207 yards.

In the meantime, the Irish’s luck seems to have run out since as they have dropped their second in a row, as Michigan State edged out a thrilling 34-31 overtime victory at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.

Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist threw for 369 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception, to lead the way for the Irish who after leading for much of the game, allowed the Spartans to tie it up late in the final quarter of play, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra session the Irish took a 31-28 lead before MSU found the end zone following a fake field goal to edge out the Irish for an exciting win.

The Notre Dame defense couldn’t control the line of scrimmage and allowed the Spartans 203 yards on the ground, giving way to Le’Veon Bell’s 114 yards rushing yards. But it was the pass coverage that seemed to have the biggest breakdown, conceding three of five MSU touchdowns for 274 yards.

They cannot repeat that lapse if they want even a glimmer of hope at containing the Cardinal’s high- octane offense.

If they Notre Dame secondary thought last weekend’s romp was bad, now they will have to contain a trio of receivers in Chris Owusu, Chris Givens, and Doug Baldwin, who have combined for 23 touchdowns thus far in the season.

As far as the Stanford defense, they have been spectacular, holding foes to a meager 8.5 points per game while stymieing their opponents passing attack and stuffing the run.

Toby Gerhart ran for 205 yards and three scores, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass and scored the game-winning touchdown with 59 seconds left to help Stanford beat the Irish, 45-38 in last season’s meeting.

Things have changes since then, but the Cardinal don’t seem to be missing a step in a post-Gerhart era, in fact, they have become a more balanced team. Notre Dame on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have recovered fully from the losses of Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate.

Stanford is the smart pick in this game for a couple of simple reasons. The Fighting Irish simply cannot stop the pass, and the Cardinal possesses one of the nation’s truly elite quarterbacks in Luck, who should have a field day in this one.
