UCLA Bruins vs. No. 7 Texas Longhorns Preview

On Saturday afternoon in a nationally televised non-conference match up on ABC the 7th ranked Texas Longhorns (3-0) host the UCLA Bruins (1-2). UCLA had high expectations this season, but they have sputtered out of the gates and are 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Pac 10. However, in their last game they beat a nationally ranked team, but now face a Texas squad on the road who has National Championship aspirations.

The Bruins play a killer schedule this season, as after playing the 7th ranked Longhorns they play 4 teams in their Pac 10 conference that are currently ranked in the top 25.

Texas had their first big test last week facing Texas Tech and their dynamic offense and their defense came up big only giving up 14 points in the win. Even though UCLA is only 1-2 they are coming off a big win and the Longhorns cannot overlook them. The Bruins hope that is the case, as in the next few weeks it is make or break for Texas. After facing the Bruins the Longhorns face #8 Oklahoma in the Red River Game next week and then the week after are on the road playing #6 Nebraska.

In their last games Texas beat Texas Tech 24-14 and UCLA finally looked like the team many though they would be this season beating, then, 23rd ranked Houston 31-13.

Heading into this game Texas is 1-2 ATS and UCLA is also 1-2 ATS.

Texas played a sloppy game in the win over Texas Tech with 4 turnovers and they were penalized 11 times for 95 yards. If they play like that again against a hot Bruins’ squad they may be upset at home.

QB Garrett Gilbert, who was 21/36 for 227 yards and 2 TD against Tech, leads the Longhorns’ offense but he also had 3 INT. He only led Texas to 6/20 on 3rd down conversions.

Texas did not have a good game running the ball against Texas Tech with only 93 yards on the ground. RB Foswhitt Whittaker only had 55 yards averaging 3.7 yards per carry and Cody Johnson only had 35 yards averaging 2.1 yards per carry.

The Texas offense will be facing a UCLA defense that gave up 360 yards (252 passing 108 rushing) in the win over Houston. The Bruins have been solid against the pass ranking 27th in the nation in pass defense, but their rushing defense has been weak ranking 105th in the nation. Unless the Bruins step up and stop the run they will be in trouble.

UCLA’ defense forced Houston into 3 turnovers and they may have to get some in this game to have any chance of winning since the Longhorns are better on both sides of the ball.

The Bruins beat Houston because they of their rushing attack, which racked up 266 yards on the ground. RB Johnathan Franklin blew up for 158 yards and 3 TD in the win and he will be facing a Texas run defense that held Texas Tech to -14 rushing yards, yes -14, last week. Overall, Texas has the nation’s top ranked rushing defense only allowing an average of 44 yards per game in their first 3 games.

Since the Texas run D is so solid Bruins’ QB Kevin Prince may have to play well. That is a tall task since he leads UCLA and their 118th ranked passing offense. If Texas can stop the run it may spell doom for the Bruins, who are averaging 100 passing yards per game.

The Longhorns won last week, but did not play a good game and that will not happen 2 weeks in a row. This game is a good match up for the Longhorns, as their stellar run defense will thwart the Bruins on the ground and UCLA simply does not have the passing offense to stay in this game. Look for Texas to lay a beat down on UCLA and easily cover the spread.

Trends:

UCLA is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 road games against teams with a winning home record.
Texas is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 games and in their last 5 home games.

Pick: Texas -16 ½

Jason did OK last week going 4-4 for the week in the college game and while he has yet to be below .500 for any of the 3 weeks he wishes the Redskins could have played some D against the Texans in losing their first game of the season to the Lone Star State.
