There’s no excuse for Georgia Tech not to be 2-0 heading to North Carolina this weekend. The Yellow Jackets were favored by double-digit points over Kansas last week and fell 28-25 in a stunner.

The problem last week wasn’t really the offense. The triple-option was as deadly as ever. Josh Nesbitt ran for two scores and the Yellow Jackets compiled 291rushing yards overall. The offensive scheme masks the fact that Nesbitt may be overrated. As dynamic as he’s supposed to be, he averaged just 2.2 yards per carry and completed just 33 per cent of his passes.

Still it was defense and mental mistakes that sunk Georgia Tech last week. They allowed 407 yards of total offense to Kansas; Jordan Webb threw three touchdown passes. They also had a 13-yard punt, a roughing the passer penalty and a kickoff that went out of bounds. They practically handed the game to the Jayhawks.

You can bet Paul Johnson will whip Georgia Tech into shape for the battle with North Carolina. The Jackets won’t get caught napping this time. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

North Carolina Tar Heels (0-1)

North Carolina is probably just eager to get back on the football field. Their offseason and off-week have been rocky, with suspensions galore and assistant coach John Blake resigning. In total, 12 Tar Heels remain suspended or at least doubtful to play this weekend. That list includes high-impact defensive players like Robert Quinn and Kendric Burney. Marvin Austin is also suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.

On offense, top wideout Greg Little once again looks like he won’t play. Same goes for goal-line guy Ryan Houston. But the news isn’t all bad; Shaun Draughn has been cleared to play by the NCAA. It should be a nice boost for UNC to get its featured runner back into the starting lineup.

Even a depleted Tar Heels offense should keep Georgia Tech on its toes. T.J. Yates had a massive game under center in North Carolina’s opener against LSU, throwing for 412 yards and three touchdowns. His main target was Jheranie Boyd, who caught six passes for 221 yards and a score. If the Yellow Jackets play like they did against Webb in Kansas, they could be in major trouble again this week.

The pick:

The Tar Heels showed against LSU that bettors can’t take them lightly despite all their suspensions. However, even against a fully loaded North Carolina roster, Georgia Tech owns this historical rivalry. The Yellow Jackets have won 10 of their last 12 against UNC. They’ll also be angry after having their pride wounded last week. The triple option against a “D” missing several of its most important players could be scary. I like the Yellow Jackets to triumph on the road this week.
