The Clemson Tigers will have to do it without C.J. Spiller this year, but they do still have quite a bit of talent on their roster. They are 2-0 so far this year, but they have had two cupcakes.
The offense is led by Kyle Parker. Parker is a sophomore quarterback who also stars on the baseball diamond for the Clemson Tigers. Andre Ellington isn’t quite the explosive back that Spiller was, but he is very talented and should do well in the running game. The offensive line has four returning starters and they should be improved from last year. The weakness of the offense is primarily at the wide receiver spot, where there aren’t any clear leaders or play makers for Parker to get the ball to.
The Clemson Tigers defense is loaded with ability, especially on the defensive line. The defensive tackles are both huge and they can plug up the lanes. On the outside, Da’Quan Bowers hasn’t lived up to the hype just yet, but I think he still could. The defensive line at Clemson is the best in the ACC. The linebackers return only Brandon Maye from last year, so they will likely struggle at times. The secondary is full of talented veterans that should do very well against the pass this year. Overall, this defense should definitely be one of the best in the ACC.
Auburn
The Auburn Tigers are now ranked #15 in the country and they are looking like a team that could make some noise in 2010.
The Auburn offense was terrific last year, and they should be just as dynamic this season. Cameron Newton is the new starter at quarterback, and he has all the tools to be a star at this position. Newton is 6’6 and 250 pounds, but he is quite mobile and has a big arm. The running back position is extremely deep for Auburn, as they have three very good runners in Fannin, McCalebb, and Dyer. The offensive line has proven they are great at run blocking, and they are improving in the passing game as well. Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery provide two high quality wide receivers for this offense.
The Auburn defense had a tough time last year, but they appear to be improving this season. They allowed just 14 points last week in their win at Mississippi State. Craig Stevens and Josh Bynes are the leaders of the defense, and they both roam the field well from their linebacker positions. The front four of the defense is the biggest question mark. They aren’t as big as most in the league and they have struggled to stop power running games. This defense is improved, but they still will hold this team back some in the biggest games this year.
The Pick:
The battle of the Tigers should be a good game. Clemson has the better defense and Auburn has the better offense. I think the home field advantage will probably be enough for Auburn to win this one. The best value play here looks to be the under. Clemson has a good enough defense that I doubt Auburn will run up a ton of points on them, and I expect to see a lot of running from both teams.
