Ball State

The Ball State Cardinals were great in 2008 and terrible in 2009. The 2010 season is expected to fall somewhere in the middle. The team has plenty of question marks to go around, but they are also not nearly as young as they were last season.

MiQuale Lewis was granted an extra year of eligibility and the Cardinals will need a lot from him in this game and through the entire season. Lewis is just 5’6, but he is a real weapon in the backfield. Lewis ran for 1,736 yards two years ago and 871 yards last year. The quarterback spot is a huge question mark, with both Kelly Page and Keith Wenning seeing action in their loss against Liberty last weekend. The offensive line appears to be improving quite a bit from a year ago, but there aren’t many weapons on the outside at all. The running game is solid, but the passing game is non-existent right now.

The Ball State defense hasn’t been very good the last couple years, and they don’t appear to be much better this year. The defense gave up 395 yards of offense to Liberty last weekend. The pass defense is a real problem, and this team has struggled to keep opponents out of the end zone over the last couple years. College Football

Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers are a team I think could surprise some people in 2010, but they haven’t looked that great to start the season. They lost to Notre Dame in the opener, and then played a very lethargic game game against Western Illinois last Saturday.

Robert Marve is the key to this offense being consistently good this year. The transfer from Miami has the tools to get it done, but he needs to make better decisions with the football. He already has thrown three interceptions in the first two weeks. The Purdue running game badly misses Ralph Bolden, but Dierking and McBurse should be good enough to get the job done in this one. The offense needs to step it up a notch if they are going to be ready go Big Ten Conference play later this month.

The Purdue defense looked decent against Notre Dame, but they were torched by Western Illinois last weekend. The secondary is a real cause for concern for this Boilermakers team. They allowed 286 passing yards against Western Illinois. Ball State probably won’t be able to take advantage of Purdue’s secondary issues, but teams in the Big Ten will. The front seven are quite good, and I would expect them to fare pretty well stopping the run against the Cardinals rushing attack.

Carson Wiggs is one of the best kickers in the country, so that gives Purdue an extra edge against most teams.

The Pick:

The Ball State Cardinals couldn’t beat Liberty last weekend at home, which makes me think they’ll have a lot of trouble in their first road game at Purdue. Purdue hasn’t been sharp in their first couple games, but I think this is a solid matchup for them. The Boilers will stop the run well and force Ball State to try to move the ball through the air. I’ll take Purdue to cover the 16.5 points in this one.

Ball State vs. Purdue Score Prediction: Purdue 35 Ball State 14
