Mississippi State

Mississippi State came up just short in their first SEC game last week against Auburn. The Bulldogs have clearly improved a great deal under Dan Mullen, and now they are looking for a signature win to put them on the map in college football.

The offense has been the weakness over the last few years at Mississippi State. Tyler Russell and Chris Relf are both doing a solid job at quarterback this year, which is helping their production a little bit. The team misses Anthony Dixon in a big way at tailback, and while they have several guys trying to fill that spot, they are certainly experiencing a big drop in production in the running game. Chad Bumphis is the real play maker for this offense, and they must find a way to get the ball in his hands as often as possible.

The defense for the Bulldogs is actually quite good. The defensive line is a huge area of strength for this squad. Pernell McPhee is a great defensive lineman who will be playing at the NFL level before long. The defense has been able to get heat on the quarterback even without bringing big blitzes, which is extremely helpful to their cause. The secondary has done a solid job as well so far this year. This defense allowed 17 points against a dynamic Auburn offense last week. College Football

LSU

The Tigers of LSU will be playing on their new home turf on Saturday night. LSU’s Tiger Stadium will now have purple turf, and this will be the first game played on it. I guess the smurf turf in Boise made them think purple was a good idea here? LSU is 2-0 and up to #12 in the rankings, but this team has plenty of room for improvement.

The LSU offense is all about the running game, since they have struggled to get anything going through the air. Steven Ridley and Russell Shephard are quality backs and they are running behind a powerful offensive line. In order for this team to beat the best in the SEC Jordan Jefferson and the passing game will have to get going a little bit. The star power is lacking a little bit on offense this year for LSU, and I think it will eventually catch up to them against top ranked teams.

The LSU defense is definitely the strength of the team. Patrick Peterson is the man that gets everything started, both as a corner and as a special teams star. The LSU defensive line is absolutely stuffing the run so far this year. LSU has allowed just 89 rushing yards in their first two games of the season. The defense has done a great job getting off the field on third down. Their first two opponents converted on just 6 out of 30 third down conversion attempts. I expect this to be one of the better defenses in the SEC this year.

The Pick:

Both of these teams are clearly stronger on the defensive side of the football. LSU has virtually no passing game and the Bulldogs have virtually no running game. In the end the LSU Tigers should win this one behind their strength on both lines, but I think Mississippi State will put up a fight. I like the under in this one.

Mississippi State vs. LSU Score Prediction: LSU 20 Mississippi State 13
