In a non-conference match up in the Lone Star State between a couple of teams that are dark horses to make a bowl game the Baylor Bears (1-0) host the Buffalo Bulls (1-0).

College football lines have Baylor as a 16.5-point favorite since they are at home and from a big BCS conference.

Buffalo won the Mid American Conference in 2008 and played in the International Bowl, but went 5-7 last season and did not go bowling. This season the Bulls have a new head coach, but still have some pieces to work with and they will be a force to deal with in the Mid American Conference.

Baylor went 4-8 last year, but they have some of their best players back and they are no longer the laughing stock of the Big 12. They have one of the most exciting QB’s in the conference and they are looking for their first winning season since joining the Big 12. However, that will not be easy facing the solid teams in the conference as well as 4th ranked TCU next week.

Buffalo Bills vs. Baylor Bears Preview

In their opening games last week Baylor beat Sam Houston State 34-3 and Buffalo blanked Rhode Island 31-0. Really, Rhode Island has a football team? The Bears could not cover the 39-5-point spread against Sam Houston State so they head into this game 1-0 ATS while the Bulls did cover the spread and are 1-0 ATS.

In Baylor’s win over Sam Houston State they played well on both sides of the ball racking up 463 yards on offense and only giving up 195 yards on defense. The season of the Bears will depend on ultra-exciting QB Robert Griffin, who was stellar in the opening week passing for 242 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT and rushing for 59 yards and 1 TD averaging just under 10 yards per carry. He gives opposing defenses nightmares with his duel threat ability.

Buffalo has a decent pass rush led by Steven Means (5 sacks last season) and he and the whole line has to pressure Griffin and also keep him from getting out in the open field.

The Buffalo secondary is led by All American candidate Davonte Shannon and while they were decent last season they only had 7 INT and they need to make some plays and have good coverage, as Griffin has some solid targets.

In the blowout Baylor rushed for 200 yards and their big gun in the backfield that is not a QB is RB Jay Finley, who had 51 rushing yards.

The Baylor offensive line is a big issue this season and in the last 2 seasons they have given up 59 sacks. It is vital for them to protect Griffin, as if he goes out or is on his butt the whole game Baylor is toast.

Buffalo had 423 yards of offense in their shutout of Rhode Island and talented QB Jerry Davis, who had 302 yards with 4 TD and 1 TD in the game, leads them. Baylor does not have a good pass rush and they will be facing a Buffalo offensive line whose strength is their pass protection.

The run defense is also a weakness for the Bears, but luckily they will be facing a Buffalo team that only had 91 rushing yards against Rhode Island. The pass rush is big for Baylor in this game and if they cannot pressure Davis they will need a big game from their offense to get the home win.

Davis has a couple of legit WR’s in Marco Rivers and Alex Neutz, who combined for 254 receiving yards and 2 TD in the Bulls opening week win. The Baylor secondary is a very fast unit and they will need a playmaker to step up since they lost Jordan Lake, who was 2nd on the Bears last season in tackles. The secondary will have to step it up, especially if their front line D cannot get to Davis.

Trends

Buffalo is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
Baylor is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games against teams with a winning record.

Thos game will come down to which QB can play better. Both players under center are solid, but Griffin can also run the ball and that will cause major problems for the Buffalo defense. However, this game will be close and the Bulls will not get blown out.

Pick: Buffalo +16.5
