No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 13 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

The Big 12 Championship Game between Oklahoma (10-2) and Nebraska (10-2) is for all the marbles since the winner will snag an automatic BCS bowl berth while the loser will be out of the BCS picture. College football lines have Oklahoma as 4.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 55.

In their last games Nebraska killed Colorado 45-17 and Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State in a barnburner 47-41.

Nebraska has not won the Big 12 title since 1999.

The Sooners have been on fire in their 3 game winning streak, especially on offense where they have averaged just over 48 points per game. They have one of the best passing offenses in the nation and they will be facing a Nebraska pass defense that ranks 2nd in the nation only giving up an average of 144.75 passing yards per game.

The Huskers have the nation’s 8th ranked rushing offense with 3 guys that can rack up the yards on the ground, which is not a good match up for Oklahoma and their 63rd ranked rushing defense.

Heading into this Big 12 Championship game Oklahoma is 7-5 ATS and Nebraska is 5-6-1 ATS. The favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 games between these Big 12 rivals.

Oklahoma QB Landry Jones has played great in the Sooners’ 3-game winning streak and last week in the HUGE win over Oklahoma State he passed for 468 yards with 4 TD and 3 INT. He will have to forget last season’s 10-3 loss to Nebraska where he threw 5 picks. He and his main targets of Ryan Broyles and Kenny Stills will be tested, big time, against the Huskers and their great secondary. Nebraska really has to key on Broyles, who has almost 1,400 receiving yards this season and now allow him to make the big play down the field.

Nebraska has a good pass rush with 29 sacks on the season, which ranks 31st in the nation, and if they can pressure Jones in the pocket it gives them a much better chance to win this game.

If the Huskers shut down the Sooners’ passing offense there will be a lot of pressure on OU RB DeMarco Murray to move the chains. He has played well lately, but he is not the focal part of the Sooners’ offense. However, he may get a lot of touches in this game facing Nebraska and their 56th ranked rushing defense. Murray is banged up and is questionable for this game and if he cannot go Jones will likely have to do it all on offense.

Oklahoma has a very tough task stuffing the run in this game since the Huskers feature duel threat QB Taylor Martinez (974 rushing yards 12 TD) and the RB duo of Roy Helu Jr. (1,120 yards 10 TD) and Rex Burkhead (822 yards 7 TD). If the Sooners cannot stop the run Jones and the offense will really have to light up the scoreboard for them to win this game. If OU can play well against the run and make Martinez beat them with his arm they will be in good shape. If this game becomes a shootout through the air the Sooners definitely have the advantage.

Nebraska does have a great secondary, but Jones will continue his solid play and be able to move the chains through the air. The Sooners will not be able to totally stop the Huskers on the ground, but their rushing D will play just well enough for them to win and cover the 4.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Nebraska is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
Oklahoma is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite, and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games as a favorite of 3.5-10.

Pick: Oklahoma -4.5
