Michigan State

The Michigan State Spartans were extremely fortunate to pull out a 35-31 win over Purdue last weekend. Mark Dantonio knows his team must play better this week at Penn State. A share of the Big Ten title is on the line.

Kirk Cousins is the leader of the Michigan State offense. The quarterback has completed 66.8% of his passes this year, and he has thrown for 2,553 yards. Michigan State’s offense is most effective when they are able to run the ball first, and then find open receivers with play action passes. Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell give the team a nice tailback tandem, but they have struggled a bit in some of the big games this year. The offensive line of Michigan State must win the battle at the line of scrimmage in this game. The Spartans offense is averaging 32 points per game this year.

Michigan State’s defense is still not terrific, but they are much better than last season. Greg Jones leads a terrific linebacker trio, and this unit stops the run quite well. The concerning area of the defense is the secondary. The cornerbacks struggle against top receivers and this team typically gives up quite a few yards through the air. Expect Michigan State to bring quite a few blitzes in this one to try to help their secondary.

Penn State

The Penn State Nittany Lions started the season very poorly, but they have definitely been playing better football of late. Joe Paterno just announced he is coming back for another year in 2011, so this shouldn’t be his last regular season game.

Matt McGloin has helped this offense take a large step forward in the last few weeks. McGloin has 11 touchdown passes and just three interceptions this year. Last week he threw for 315 yards in the Penn State win over Indiana. Evan Royster is the primary back for Penn State, but they have found a new weapon in freshman Silas Redd as well. The two form a nice tailback tandem, and they will test Michigan State’s front seven. This offense struggled mightily at the beginning of the year, but they have put up at least 33 points in four of their last five games. Penn State has become a solid offensive unit.

The Penn State defense isn’t nearly as strong as they were last year. The team has struggled against opponents who run the football well. The secondary has done a nice job on a consistent basis this year. Michigan State will certainly look to run the football early on, so it will be up to this defensive front to hold their own in this matchup.

The Pick:

The Spartans have been very fortunate to win a couple of their games recently. Penn State is a much improved team. I think the Nittany Lions will put up plenty of points, and it will be up to the Spartans to keep up. I think the Spartans will lose this one in a very hostile environment.

Michigan State vs. Penn State Score Prediction: Penn State 31 Michigan State 24
